Small collection of useful links to possibly learn from.

Postby Kragt » 10 Nov 2011 06:44

Hey there everypony!

So while I am waiting for my new music program to arrive in the mail I thought I would spread some... well links and sources.

These are various videos from around the web I have used to learn from, and some of them could be relevant to those who havn't seen them/do not know much/everything yet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!! WARNING!!!!

The following are not mine, in addition if you are learning and you learn from these you do restrict yourself from learning these things in another way that may teach you more. Also by learning these theories you may learn them at the cost of something new interesting or different.

That is just a heads up.

------------------------------------------------------------

Theory introduction:
http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/episode-07-pacing
This introduces you to a basic theory on pacing your song. This is primarily from an entertainment perspective, so if you wish to make music for some reason other than entertainment then you may wish to skip this.

http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/video-game-music
Explains a basic concept about melodies and background music.

Extra Creditz has a few other useful epsiodes for music makers but these are the two I find most enriching.
Other possible eps to learn from if you so feel inclined are:
Symbolism 101, No Redeeming Value, Enriching Lives, Innovation

General Tips:
http://blog.dubspot.com/ten-production- ... ay-badawi/ Couple of tips where some of them apply everywhere and others only apply to electronic or mixing music.

http://www.youtube.com/user/Propellerhe ... 134198A5E9 - 52 videos all kinds of tips on using Propellerhead's Reason. If you use reason these are a good way to find an excuse to delve into some of the trickier features of the program. (It got me into tinkering with the settings in Thor.)

http://www.youtube.com/user/Agniveshbag ... lFA_bmtVjU - I know I just linked this in another thread, but this vid (along with some of this guys other stuff.) was a great watch in learning how a song is put together. He uses FL so anyone wanting to learn FL may gain some benefit from watching him work through this a bit. He makes the whole song start to finish and you can learn a few tips from his stuff too. Like one way to make good uses of a frequency filter, or doing more with drum and volume controls. Also has a few quick tips in here that can be used in most programs that write music in "Colored Boxes."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0EY0VmZ8qE - Hope the artist doesn't mind me posting this here. But its rare to see someone post the file like this, again a FL where you get to see a whole song with some of the casing removed. Not as much mind you, but still useful to see what and how much is used in certain parts of a song. +20% for being pony related.

I know I had more videos about dubstep somewhere but I misplaced them. I will likely come back and edit this as I get more relevant information to post.

Again I am not an expert, but I thought there may be some people who would benefit from seeing these.

I hope these were helpful to somepony. Until then have a wonderful day everypony!

I see this as very useful.

Hell yeah, I'm going through those. I love PA and I didn't even know about this.

I'll contribute:

If you plan on doing more than using presets in a synthesizer, this link has an INCREDIBLY in-depth guide to sound and how it applies to synthesizers. I haven't gone through the whole thing yet, but I read a bit by bit. It's really technical but that's a good thing!

Sound on Sound is an pretty cool resource in itself as well.
