The Reese Bass Thread

Let's discuss reese basses here.
Here are two things I made:
https://soundcloud.com/theocularinvisible/reese-resampling-practice
https://soundcloud.com/theocularinvisible/neurostep
Let me know if you want more details on how I made them.

The second one is a little scratchy for my tastes but I like the first one. Tell me, how did you get the kind of 'wet' quality of the first one? High resonance?

Wow, I have the exact opposite taste in reeses then. xD

I love the second one, but the first one seems actually a bit too wet for me. It almost sounds like it's been vocoded or something, and it's a damn cool effect, just not really my preference. Love that second one though.

I kinda like it. The way you panned it was cool, but I think the reese might sound better if EQ'd out some of the upper mids, but hey, that's just me.

This is a patch I've had for a while now thrown together with some quick drums. Nothing too special.

Eh, looking back on it I like the second one more than I did before. I would guess hard clipping was used? I might drop off some reeses later.

omg, ocular, what is the modulation you have on the first reese bass you made.

Also, why is it called a reese bass

I believe it was named after someone who (this next part I remember only vaguely so it might be wrong) first created it. For some reason I want to say the guy's name was David Reese.

Hm... Well, I still want to know what modulation ocular is using on his first sample. I hear songs using very similar modulation to that all the time and I can never seem to replicate it. No matter how much I want to use it for a song.

I still think my sound design is garbo.

https://soundcloud.com/motivfsmusic/reese-test

Is it typical for everyone else that Soundcloud absolute kills their mix? I don't know why it always happens to me but it sounds like it doesn't to others btw.

Yes soundcloud uses some weird compression that kills certain frequency areas ^^

all my highs sound super horrible aaaaahh

Why you don't notice it on others is because you haven't heard the song in flawless quality 10 times in your DAW.
It's kinda like a low mp3 vs wav, give two persons one of them each, they'll both enjoy the song just as much and probably critique mixing error exactly the same.
But if you compare the two, you'll hear slight differences.

Ah ok, atleast it's not only me then :D! Yeah, I figure I guess after listening to a song (or loop) millions of times I guess it becomes natural when you hear the distortion from compression.

It's a square wave Reese (called a Hoover bass) that I made in Massive. It has two bandreject filters and they're both automated randomly.

I exported that as a WAV and then resampled it in IL Harmor with a bit of distortion (I used the log distortion).

I was literally just about to post something about IL Harmor. I fucking love that synth so much.

Working on a few more reeses right now that I'll resample. If anyone wants, I can put up the harmor patches later too.

Funny, just last night I was doing some experimenting with this stuff. I make a ton of dnb so reeses are kinda natural to me but there's still lots of stuff about them that I haven't tried yet. (I also have a tendency to make really weird mid-ranged stuff rather than really deep bass)

https://soundcloud.com/gckrastin/bass-research-dnb
Don't mind the horrifically boring drums.
https://soundcloud.com/gckrastin/and-then-i-learned-to-bass-1

The first one is the stuff I did last night, the second one is something I did a few months ago. Everything was made with Harmor.
Most of the time I resample my neuro stuff but none of those basses have resampling, oddly.
Producing mediocre drum and bass since 2012.
Stuff I use: FL Studio 12, Harmor, Sytrus, Maximus, Akai MPK Mini, Numark Mixtrack

I'm gonna be getting a Bass Station 2. One thing I've heard about is the ability to put audio in through it and apply the synths effects and filters to it.

I could probably test it out by recording a bass with it, loading it onto my turn tables and then putting that recording through the BS2. Could be something worth trying, I'll try it when I get it and find some way of showing the results. Could make a reese, could make me deaf. We'll know sooner or later :P

Does anyone have any idea how to do the reese that hits at 1:01. It's probably one of my favorite reeses but I have no idea on how that could be made.

God damn I swear I had a project with a reese like this. It's definitely been resampled with some pitch bends and modulation.
I'll dig it out for you if I can find it, it's a really nice sound

I'd really like to see this.
In the meantime I'll think up a couple of Reeses and make them when I get home.
