Sound Design Help

Postby ajbiz11 » 17 Mar 2013 16:34

Okay, I don't see anything about specifically sound design...so I figure I'll ask:

Hey guys...I am kinda new to all this electronic stuff...and I can't seem to find anything good tutorial wise for sound design...

If anyone has links for sound design and all that stuff it would be helpful...I'll keep all the links below.

I would like to add that I understand music theory!

Most synths have a manual that comes with them, read that and discover what every function does. Then it's all about practicing.

Music theory is easy, all you need to do is read all the sections up to "Cadences" on the music theory dot net site you linked.

Sooooo, let me get this straight...

You call yourself ViinylScratch. You just recently joined. Admitted yourself that you didn't fully read the topic I MADE SPECIFICALLY FOR YOU, and you want US to teach you all the ins and outs of sound design simply because you don't have the time to learn it yourself?

Look down at your MIDI keyboard.
Direct forehead straight down on keys.
Resample the recording.

Oh, since we're talking about entrances onto mlr, welcome. During your stay here, you'll find that usernames like your own are really despised because they don't actually make you look "cool" or make us think you're good at music, it actually makes us, or at least me, think you're really conceited or attention whoring or whatever. Yeah, if I were you I'd like, quickly get a different artist name, but that's just me. You'll get what I'm talking about before long, where cliches in music really start to annoy you.

Anyways, on sound design, filters are very simple to understand, so if you don't understand them, learn them, because they're very commonly used.

There are two parts to learning sound design: learning the technical aspects of synthesis, and training your ear how to deconstruct sounds. Reading books and manuals will only help for the first half, as I discovered after a lot of trail and error. Getting a lot of hands-on experience is a must. To get you started here's a free book on sound design that explains the basics:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/?ahcctb9u11d81a8

And here's a few of the best freeware synths available:
Synth1 - http://www.geocities.jp/daichi1969/softsynth/
TyrellN6 - http://www.u-he.com/cms/tyrelln6
DUNE BE - http://www.mediafire.com/?8au32r1u8qhut0z

Read the book and try to apply the knowledge you gain from it as you read, the sooner you can push the technical details into your subconscious the better.

Oh and keep in mind that mixing is even more important than sound design when it comes to getting professional quality. If you're willing to spend $26 then here's a fantastic book that covers mixing, sound design, and pretty much everything else you need to know about producing EDM:
http://amazon.com/Dance-Music-Manual-To ... 240521072/
Once again though, practice and hands-on experience is everything

Along with learning these synths, as they are all fantastic and will give you a wide pallet of sounds to chose from. The only thing I could recommend is trial and error. Not that I'm any good at Sound Design, but the decent amount I've learn was from trial and error. But always keep working at it, apply what you learn. Don't be like me and learn everything before apply it, then forget it when you actually try to use it.

This forum is also quite helpful for gaining more knowledge about a wide variety of topics. http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/

I give you about 4-6 months until cliches in music and stuff start to bug you as well

Anyways, Massive is one of the most versatile and easy to use synths out there. Easy as in the user interface is set up really well, and it's just a matter of learning what everything does and then practice with it. When you bought it, it came with a manual, read the manual. And if you're really dedicated, do what I did and write down every single function neatly into a notebook, testing each function as you learn about it. That may sound like overkill, but it's really not.

Well, good luck establishing yourself as a unique musician:
https://soundcloud.com/djpon3official/
https://soundcloud.com/vinylscratch_djpon3
https://soundcloud.com/dj-vinyl-scratch-1
https://soundcloud.com/cpirate9
https://soundcloud.com/dj-p0n-3-vinyl-scratch
https://soundcloud.com/dj-pon-3s-me-nobody-else
https://soundcloud.com/dj_pon3
https://soundcloud.com/djpon3

Not wanting to come up with a unique artist name tells me a couple things about you.

1. You obviously have no intention of going into the music industry. Doing so under a name used by Hasbro themselves, and countless other musicians, most certainly leads into a conflict of Intellectual Property. You don't own the name Vinyl Scratch, so you won't be able to get a label under that name, or similar derivatives.

2. Because you have no interest in becoming an actual musician, it tells me that you're not in it to become a better musician. It tells me you're in it to get e-famous within the brony community, and you're using a name of a familiar and well known character to make people want to flock to your music.

Going back to my original reply here. We are a musician community first, and a MLP:FiM community second. Here we help each other out in order to become better musicians, and write better music for ourselves. Many of us have hopes of making a name for ourselves in the real music world, or at the very least, being serious about becoming a better musician.

We understand that becoming a musician is hard. That's why we have this site, however we also expect each person here to have some level of self-drive. A person who shows they're willing to learn, and seeks to better themselves.

We are not here to hold your hand. We are not here to only make brony music. Your overall attitude has not showed any of us that you're actually serious about learning music, so until you can show us you're actually dedicated, your not going to find many people willing to waste their time.

Although you should probably give this poor guy a break. I'm sure he gets the idea that his username was a really bad idea by now. Since he's new, he still has a chance to change his username.

Yeah, I know, but changing your artist name while you're new is a better way to go, since then people won't know your music as well and won't complain or whatever.

Haha, yeah, but it all depends on where the most people know you at. I'm sure that if Skrillex changed his stage name to "Bill", the people on orchestral music forums that care only about orchestral wouldn't even notice, lol. But then everybody else would

Buying Massive before even starting making music may not be the cleverest thing to do.
I think it's better to stick with free vst until you get some nice sounds before thinking of stepping up to a commercial soft synth.

But since you have it, learn with it, it's (imho) one of the easiest synth to learn.

The best tutorial you'll ever find is the manual. It's the same thing for every DAW/VST/plugin etc... almost everything is in the manual and it'll give you an in-depth understanding of the synth and some basic idea.

Now massive is super popular and you'll find tons of tutorials, presets banks (free or not), advices etc on the internet.
Watch some tutorials, open up some presets and try to understand the role of each parameter.
You should understand super quickly how it works.

Now about designing your own sounds, try everything. Whenever you have an idea, even a silly or original one, open an instance of massive and try it out. It may sound like crap but eventually, you'll start getting your own patches and develop your own techniques.

Also remember, the most complicated doesn't mean the best sound. You'll be surprised to hear what you can get out of a single Saw-Square I in massive.

I suggest not starting with sound design.

"The Dance Music Manual" is the best resource on making EDM i've ever encountered so you may want to start here
