CineBrass Slow Attack - anyone else noticed this?

Postby v.lossity » 01 Feb 2013 16:38

Okay, so I am a rookie so there might be some newbie mistake Im making but....

It seems like in CineBrass (and LAStrings to a lesser extent), that every time a note is triggered, there is a really long attack. It gets to the point where things are sounding pretty offbeat in my track.

So here is what I want to find out:

1. Has anyone else experienced this?

2. How does one fix or compensate for this?

3. Is this how the plugin is supposed to be?

I am a strings player and I know that strings can be very agile and should be able to play with a very short attack, so this doesn't make much sense in LA strings, but I don't know much about brass.

LASS has something called chord time. that's the time when LASS waits for a second midi note to play a chord sample instead of a single tone. You can lower that to 1 milisecond if you're sequencing.
Besides that, i also have this problem that legato samples feel a bit slow, and am waiting for help from someone more oriented in topic.

This might help, if not, I'd contact Cinesamples support.

As for the legato patches in LASS, the velocity controls the glide time between notes, so crank that bitch up to maximum if you're using a legato patch, or just the "esp sus" (I think it's called that) patch to avoid any glide at all. Another great livrary is Orchestral String Runs, and its violins don't even have that problem, though keep in mind sometimes glide is a good idea, so switch back and forth between what suits the current part in the song.

Well for Cinebrass, the first note will always have strong attack (unless really quiet), that's just how brass works. Are you using their true legato by overlapping notes over each other? If so, they should (hopefully) just blend into each other.
If it's still giving you grief, you could manually change the attack in Kontakt by clicking the little wrench symbol in the corner of your patch.

Never used LASS, I use Adagio Strings, which has multiple legato types recorded, so if I want quick, I just use quick...

Okay, I have tried setting velocity to max and while this helped, it didnt totally solve the problem. I am going to try layering with articulations and see how that works

I found that working with automation for the midi channels in the actual track is helping too.

EDIT: okay so my solution for CineBrass is to adjust the cc1 and cc64 channels on each track with the "articulations" patches. This allows me to either get the short articulations or legato style playing without the problems of the slow attack, and its all in one patch, so I save CPU.

Just if anyone else is interested.

I don't use LASS or CineBrass~ When I want more attack, I often layer a staccato or marcarto patch over the top.
Not always the best solution, but often works fine.
