How do I make one of those "drilling" bass sounds

Postby LutariFan » 22 Jan 2013 11:48

More specifically, the bass at 2:15 in this song:

I have been fiddling around with my synth for a while, trying to make this "drilling" sound. I have a couple of song ideas in my head, but they all need this sound :/

Is it LFO's? Honestly, I have no idea. It does sound like putting the rate of the LFO high could make it... but well, I don't know. The rest of the sounds in the song I know how to make, but this one is kinda alien to me xD

do you mean like, the supersaw? if so thats simple,
just get 3 saw waves detune them a bit, make like 3-5 voices (to taste) in massive's voicing tab, add some small pitch cutoff, set to monophonic, add some poramento, and play with effects
should be generic for any synth, but this was said from a massive POV

Ah, no, supersaws I very much know how to make. It's the heavily sidechained bass. You can only hear the "drilling" sound of it between the kicks.

Try modulating the pitch of a waveform with a sine at 0.25 or 0.333 or 0.5 the main pitch. that and/or FM well it essentially is fm already but
[00:27:11] <@z0r8> you are voiced, now shut up

What makes it "Drill" is the sidechain silly! Unless you already know that, and you're talking about the bass itself. In that case, it's pretty much a distorted saw, or at least, that's what my ears are hearing.

Yea, I ment the bass itself. I said "drilling" because the thing it sounds more like in my ears is somebody drilling a hole in a wall or something.

That's more of a hypersaw if anything, if you want to make actual drills then look at my massive patch

there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube.
