Logic Review

Postby JSynth » 30 Dec 2012 13:48

So, I have been looking around for a new DAW for my music and one of the programs that I have been looking at is Logic.

So my question is, how good is Logic exactly? How flexible is it with its instruments and sound generator?

I don't want to invest in a $200 program only to find out it's a pain to use.

It's my main DAW, and it's a dream to use. Once you know your way around the basics, it's easy. It's a lot cheaper than it used to be, and still comes with all the great features, you have multiple synths, a whole range of sampled instruments, and hundreds of loops and one shot effects and stuff. VSTs are AU's in Logic, and 90% of plugins are in AU as well as VST, just a select few aren't.

^ read this before investing money. I've yet to hear anything legitimately bad about FL studio, and it comes with lifetime updates, so I'm good with that. Movie composer pros seem to like Ableton and Cubase. If I could pick again, I'd go with Cubase myself, but FL has been good to me.

The thing about FL studio is, as you probably have guessed, I am a mac user. Now, yes, I know FL studio can run on boot camp, which is good and all, but that makes me wonder about compatibility.

For example: Will mac installed VSTIs work on FL Studio?

Besides, the reason I got a mac was because every person I asked told me that Macintosh works better with music software. To me, going out to buy Windows 7/8 so that I can install it on my mac, sort of ruins the point.

I used Logic for a year and never really ended up doing much with it due to the workflow (switched to Live). Logic's got some fantastic built-in synths and effects and it's incredibly powerful - especially for its price - but I ended up getting really frustrated with it. It seems better suited to traditional music production than electronic music and it makes setting up complex effect chains annoying. On the other hand, Lavender seems to love it and I know it's popular among dance producers, so by all means it'll probably work for you.

I'd say if you're looking for a DAW with a great set of built in instruments and effects (and a crapton of samples), go for Logic. It's an absolute bargain for what it is.

Amen to that, I spent over $800 on Logic when I got it.

I think if your serious about music, it's the perfect program to get. If your used to using another program, you'll have all the usual issues that arise when it doesn't quite work the same way as your old program.

Hm, being a user with Logic as my main DAW, you wouldn't need FL to run samples. Many of Logics built-ins are great, and as an Orchestral composer, it's quite friendly with Kontakt and Play. I highly recommend it if you're going for a mac.
