Need Help syncing vocals to tempo.

Postby Thelastdevastator » 25 Nov 2012 19:50

I dunno if this has already been posted on a thread already but I'm having problems syncing the vocals to a tempo mostly around 142-175, I have watched some tut's on youtube but they really didn't help me achieve what I'm trying to do.

if you already know the tempo of the vocals then you can just use Audacity to change the tempo without changing pitch (doesn't work well with huge changes though, like 130bpm to 170bpm). Other than that, if your DAW has a metronome (Reason dose, IDK about FL), then use it. I don't normally use vox though, so maybe one of the more experienced producers could help you further, if this doesn't help.

In FL? (Judging by you signature) what I do is set the vocal track playing, right click the tempo box, click tap and then tap along to the tempo of the vocal track. Works for me 100% of the time, provided the track stays at one set bpm.

If you mean speed it up or slow it down to tempo, you load the track into Edison, right click where it says tempo (just above the wave form) and fill its bpm, which can be found using the previous method. Then you can drag it into your playlist and it will ask if you want it stretched.

What tempo were the vocals recorded at and what tempo are you trying to sync them too? 142 - 175 doesn't tell us much. What genre are you producing and what genre were the vocals produced too? Do you just want a straight vocal track across your song or do you want to splice them up and make quick edits/cuts (more brostep vibe)?

There's many ways to sync vocals and it all depends on what you are trying to achieve with them.

I haven't really tried to do it that way I mostly tired using the fit to tempo or the detect tempo options cause most of the vocal stems/Acapellas I have have no tempo in the information.

If anyone can figure out what genre this is, please tell me, cause I have no clue. :D

Well I would usually just put the vocals in newtone edit them there a bit then slice them up in slicex, and since I mostly do dubstep I wanted them to run on during the intro area of the song then slice them up during the bass wobbles.

It was the bab seed Acapella I dunno what genre it was but it had a sort of 80's pop feel to me at least.

(If I did a bad job at explaining i'm very sorry I'm not really good at explaining things in type)

Its best to give all the information possible when posting help threads as people are more likely to help and provide better feedback.

Slicex is a great tool for choping up samples, look up youtube tutorials for just that in FL studio, not necessarily how to fit them into a genre but how to use the tool. 'Babs Seed' sounds like it sits ~134 BPM, I wouldn't speed it up too much or the feeling of the song will be ruined but 140-145 BPM could work for the intro/breakdown sections. I haven't used FL in a year and a half so I'm going off of memories here but from what I remember I would throw a vocal into edison, find the songs tempo and warp in place, then I would export it a cut up the sections I would use and place them in the timeline and adjust to fit the final song with the new tempo.

Just as a friendly tip: doing the research yourself will be far more beneficial to you when you are first learning things. You won't realize it right away but it is a skill you need to succeed; finding the answers yourself. (I'm not saying asking questions is bad but please help yourself and research while you wait for the answers).

What I've always done is gone to this website and once I got the BPM, I would right click the waveform in the shape properties tab in FL and punch the BPM there. Then I would stretch according to how faster/slower I needed it to be.

I used to manually slide the tempo up and down until it matched the song, but it's insanely tedious. If you're off by one bpm, it'll sound in synch for a good while, but slowly drift out. The detect tempo thing never works too well on songs that either have a strange beat (like a breakbeat) or rock/metal type things that don't have a strictly prominent 1234 type beat.

As it turns out, it's not necessary to use edison. Once you find out it's tempo, you open up the wrapper, and in the "SMP" tab under "time stretching," you right click the "time" knob, then "auto detect" and then you click the "type in (BPM)" and fill in the bpm. After which, if you adjust the tempo afterwards, you'll have to right click the pitch knob and "reset" it to get the file back to it's original pitch. It's already been mentioned, but you can't speed it up or slow it down too much or the audio gets messed up.

I just synched up the vocal track of "Babs Seed" to 135 bpm, and managed to get acceptable audio at a tempo of 150bpm after stretching. Since you're doing dubstep, the standard 140 should work fine.

One tool you can (and i do) use is Acid for samples. You can do pitch detection in there and stretch very easily and keep the pitches the same even after you increse the bpm. Its very easy to move up the tempo of a sample but slowing it down does not work as well (better to trim if you can).
