Graintable synthesis?

Postby Random111223 » 27 Oct 2012 02:08

I was reading this interview of Koan Sound, where they mentioned that 80% of their sounds come from the Malström synth in Reason, which doesn't have a standalone version. I really like Koan's sound design (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kgIDdWwxUg#t=74 for an idea) so does anyone have an idea if there's a VST similiar to Malström which can be attached to FL Studio? Malström is a combination of granular synthesis and wavetable synthesis (=graintable) which AFAIK is not very popular. It's very hard to recreate these kind of sounds in traditional wavetable synths (massive f.ex) so that's why im asking this.

You could download demo of Reason and use it as a ReWire slave (I've lost count how many times I've said this :D). That way you could use the real thing. Malmström has some granular properties but alltogether it sounds more like a wavetable synth rather than granular. That being said I think Massive could create something similiar if you know what to do.
Holy fuck, it's been such a long time! Thanks all 'yall everyponies! If you're a familiar username on a nostalgia trip, I sincerely hope life's been treating you well. I've certainly had quite a journey! The ride never ends! <3

Yeah, demo version and ReWire all the way. Reason actually has some really good synths (Thor, Malstrom, and Subtractor). Thor is essentially the do-everything synth, while Malstrom has pretty similar capabilities and is a bit easier to figure out. Subtractor is good for weirder sounds and also for Skream-esque basses.

As for standalone VSTs, I don't know, cuz I use Reason myself. Sorry :/

Massive does graintable (granular synthesis over a wavetable) but not to the extent Malstrom will.

you could give Cyclop by Sugar Bytes a try. Once I make the switch to Ableton, I'll be doing everything in Cyclop.... also, lols, "clop"
