Toms?

Postby Friv » 15 Oct 2012 22:18

I've been trying for ages to find/make great/realistic sounding toms, but I just can't. I would sample my toms, but they're way out of tune and i don't have a decent mic. If anyone can help me find/make some good toms, I would be very grateful.
This is a good example of how I would like to sound (around 25 sec. in):

(Also: HOW GREAT IS THIS [Madeon + Dnb] <3 ^)
Well I'm pretty much done with this site (it wasn't about the April Fool's joke I actually loved that). If for some reason somebody wants to contact me or something (not like any of you even care lol):

Madeon is a god at mixing, I can't even touch that. Anyway...

I've done a lot of tom like stuff, it exists in two or more of my tracks...

in Discord and in Arrivederci.

The important thing here isn't the sames, but how you use them. In Discord, I took several toms, played a long passage, and did a long panning automation around the listener, alongside a volume curve upwards. If you listen on headphones, it sounds like the drums swirl around towards the listener, something I did in Arrivederci a lot as well. However in Arrivederci the tom processing I did there is much more violent, and is actually something inspired by this tom fill from this Noisia track.

The one in Arrivederci? That's a loop. I've collected tons and tons of acoustic kit loops, and within those there are always fills, and these are brilliant for slotting in just before a drop, with or without processing. You can always score your own, or even take the loop and slice it up, I know that's done a lot too.

The most important thing to remember though is to get your EQ right. Not too much low end, but enough to keep the body of the tom in there, and not too much compression either, you want them to sound pretty natural and clean, not like electric toms.

I'll leave you with three things. Firstly, a set of reference tom samples I found on some metal production forum that I think would be useful for getting the exact sound Madeon has here.

Reference toms

Secondly, a small drum fill from my vault for you to play with:

Lastly, a video from Dodge and Fuski on drum fills which you might find useful. Not specifically on toms, but they are covered:

Good luck!
