bass drops?

Postby xadobex » 05 Sep 2012 18:19

hey guys! so i figured out recently that as much as i want to, i can't make a bass drop for the life of me. i got a nice sounding buildup, but then poof, all ideas and everything are gone.

any tips on bass drops or how to make them?

and no i don't mean a synth that slides downward (like all the fucking tutorials on youtube D:<)
i mean like the composition of the notes and exactly how one would go about doing that.

thanks

Pretty much any VST can make a good bass. (although you're probably going to end up using massive, don't get me wrong, it's a good synth) Try using a low-pitched distorted saw and sine wave to start with. If you're using a more dynamic synth, you can add a little tiny bit of chorus and some reverb too. You can write a bassline the same way you would with a lead synth, but if you're composing dubstep or low BPM electro I recommend using longer sustained notes with less pitch shifting (staying in the same octave the whole time). Leave some gaps to add in other basses. A bassline with just 1 bass synth will get boring after while. If you want to get more complex in your basses after that, experiment around with sylenth or massive.
Also: sidechainsidechainsidechainsidechainsidechain. It brings the whole thing together much nicer. And add some high end. Rides, hats, and some whitenoise work well.

Check out this guy's tutorials. He's one of my favorite producers, because he has mastered the lazy rich/ porter style complextro bassline. http://www.youtube.com/user/nzmusic101
Good luck!
Well I'm pretty much done with this site (it wasn't about the April Fool's joke I actually loved that). If for some reason somebody wants to contact me or something (not like any of you even care lol):

Sorry to contribute next to nothing for this thread, but seriously, this is like the 10th thread on bass drops over the course of a month, and most people keep repeating the same advice.

Aka, please use the search function, or more easily, scroll down the technique page by a few topics and see the same threads that already exist.
