Glitched Vocals?

Postby weegygreen2 » 04 Sep 2012 20:00

What's a good Windows program/vst for making Glitched Vocals?

Or can you do it inside Fl studio easily?
DAWs: Fl Studio and Ableton
Synth's: Massive, FM8, Absynth 5, Harmor
Other Stuff: Melodyne, Auto-Tune, Ohmicide, CamelPhat3, Ozone 5, Trash 2

you can chop them up manually in FL, it's a harder way but sometimes I do it. Another way is by using the fruity slicer. Or if you happen to have Gross Beat in your FL, that can work too, but it isn't free, and it's more focused towards messing up the rhythms of the song itself IMO. My best suggestion would be to use dBlue Glitch, it's free. (I'm in no way a glitch master yet, this is just what I've figured out)

Also use the search function on the forum, it's an invaluable tool towards finding good information.

I would agree with dblue Glitch. I only found it a week or two ago and have been playing with it, and it's great!

Software: I'm original, so i use Sunvox. I used to use LMMS, but the crashing drove me insane.

I'd just slice it up in FL and play it like any other percussion instrument, since that's basically what it is. :?

Use dBlue's Glitch, but render the results from it, re-import the rendered file into your project, chop it up and arrange it how you like after that. Better control over your results that way.

Also, automate various effects and things (possibly including plain old volume), and make really sudden "jumps" from, say, extremely low to extremely high in the automation curves.

I don't like dBlue. You can't even control which effect comes on via midi. Gross Beat is a much better option for glitching in FL. That and if you can get a hold of it Stutter Edit is the best multifx gltich-vst I've used. There are also free things like Live Cut which Aphex Twin has used.

However if your goal is to vocal chop then I'd say just drop your vocal track down into the playlist, turn off gridsnap and slice away. You can build melodies or sentences (SGaP style) or whatever else from there. That or if you have FL 10 or Harmor you can just load up your vocals into the resynthesis engine and automate the time controller, you can also automate the playback speed and add effects and other cool stuff. I definitely recommend trying Harmor if you haven't already, it's an amazing synth.

Side note: Anyone know anything good for splicing in linux, or am I stuck with mucking around in ardour/audacity/lmms?

@AgonistAgent, what are you using as a DAW in linux? Knowing that would help.

LMMS primarily. I'm this close to giving up and using FL studio over Wine.

@AgonistAgent, Linux is a toughy if you're dependent on proprietary software. I used it for about a month and I absolutely loved it; it ran really smoothly, looked amazing, had splendid GUI and UI, and the most friendly user experience I've ever had.

Unfortunately before that I was highly dependant on programs like Flash, Photoshop, and FL which I couldn't get to work properly in Wine, and programs like LMMS, Flash for Linux, and the GIMP fell short for me in terms of usability and features.

However, that's just me, the guy who's been using this stuff his whole life :P . I do use some open-source programs such as Apophysis and Blender and love them so I know many of these programs are fully capable of doing the same things as the propitiatory alternatives.

Anyways, in terms of vocal chopping with native Linux software, I couldn't tell you for certain, but I personally switched over from Adobe Audition after years of use to Audacity as my dedicated audio editor because I found Audacity had much better support for audio codecs and was more stable and less buggy. So it's fully capable of vocal chopping and such. I'm not sure how the audio playlist works in LMMS, but if it's anything like it is in FL then you should be able to chop up your vocals at your heart's content with it.
