vocal shuffle help?

Postby KillerAmp » 26 Aug 2012 11:51

Im trying to get an effect like stuff skrillex has in songs such as Summit and First of the Year,
My main issue is when i put some bits and pieces in a loop/song i made, thats just what it sounds like, bits and pieces, where-as skrillex's samples seem to fit exactly what he was doing melody wise in the song. I know that Omni tends to do this too, im just stumped at what to do to go from where i am with it, to where they are.

Ive tryed using sampler/simpler to adjust pitch in ableton, didnt help lol

When I use vocal cuts in songs, I tend to first write the melody, then cut up the vocals, and THEN change the melody to suit the vocals better.

Not sure if that helps, but that's what I do. Compression, EQ, and some slight reverb to help the vocals sit in the mix can help as well.

I can count on my left hand the number of times I've used vocals in a song, so take my post with as much or little salt as you like.

I'd suggest analyzing your current melody, and coming up with relative points of pitch so you know a general "scale", if you will, of how your melodies rises and falls (Perhaps have your origin at the note you start at). Then, take out your chopped samples and pick the ones with highest pitch/frequency and try to use them where your melody peaks, and the lowest where the melody reaches its bottom. OrjustdowhatCyrrickysaidbecausethatseemsmucheasier.

God, I wish I had my tablet so I could draw this out, it'd be so much simpler.

Once again, I've never used whole samples much to begin with, and chopped ones haven't gotten out of WIP-zone even... So, yeah. Good luck!

habanic, you're right that cyrricky's is much simpler to do (thanks Cyrricky :D) but your way gives me a better idea at how i should be slicing the tracks
while im on the topic
Is there a more time efficient way to slice the tracks besides Abletons Slice to midi, (it irritates the shit out of me lol)
Currently im using Audacity to cut and export a bit, but theres gotta be a better way :S
