Where to start with fm8?

Postby KillerAmp » 26 Aug 2012 11:37

Im talking from a point of view of an intermediatly experienced Massive user (know filters, preformer, steps, lfo, inserts, and eq are easy to understand for me) i know 3x osc synths rather well, but fm8 offers much different options and i have no idea how to tackle this monster of a synth :S

Welll first of all you might want to get into FM synthesizing since that is what fm8 is. I don't use it myself but I would suggest that is where you start when learninng it. I use Sytrus and the termonology and methods should somewhat be the same. But well you should start here:

I don't have time for fancy signatures.

Well, if you don't know what FM synthesis is, you should really look into it. Here, try this video:

Don't forget to watch part 2.

I personally have never tried FM8 or any FM synth, (I might start using Sytrus tho) but I would assume that it would be in your best interest to look up a ton of tutorials of your genre of choice. Eventually, you will learn how the program works and what everything does. That's how I learned how to use Massive.

Oh yeah, and EXPERIMENT. A LOT.

1. Learn about Frequency Modulation Synthesis and synthesis in general. It would be very nice if you understand what are you going do, not just mindlessly turn knobs until miracles happen.

2. RTFM

3. Watch tutorials, watch other people making their sounds, ask for tips and tricks.

4. Learn from presets. Try to recreate them, to understand what makes them sound so.

5. Experiment. But only after you completed these four steps.
also you can skip the first step if you are stoopid

1.) Expert mode
2.) with right click on A,B,C,D,E,F you enable oscillators.
3.) with clicking and dragging up empty white-dotted spaces you change the amount of frequency modulation
4.) Mess around with Ratio and shape of oscillators
5.) use envelopes/lfos to add movement
6.) repeat steps 3 and 4 and 5 until the sound is pleasant/terrible/distorted/growly enough

7.) as triangle suggested, rtfm
