Studio setup help?

Postby FLAOFEI » 26 Aug 2012 11:18

Ok, so its not realy a studio, but I need help anyway.

So Im gonna rearange more or less everything in my room, and maby get a room downstairs to use as a studio. I have a laptop with usb-keyboard and a mouse, a midi-keyboard (4 octaves), a large amp (45x35x15cm) and 2 oversized speakers (35x25x55cm).

My question is how can I set this up in a way that I get a good sound from the speakers infront of the desk? (being so large I think haveing tham on the desk is out of the question)

Could you plz post pics of your setup and review how it sounds?

Thanx

You cant simply expect to copy someone else's setup and except it to work for you, and there is way to much you would need to know about acoustics to make a 'good' studio.

Here is some quick tips I have learned about speaker placement:
- The tweeters should be at ear level
- The two monitors should each be pointed 30 degrees into the center of the room and you should sit just in-front of the crossing point.
- Your room should ideally be a rectangle shape (for the bedroom studio) and your monitors should sit as close to one of the narrower walls as possible (within 12 inches).
- Some speakers were made to sit sideways but most are not.
- It should be obvious but corners are your worst nightmare so don't put your speakers in the corner of your room.

You can raise your speakers above your desk so you get all the sound but remember to tilt them forward so those tweeters always point are your ear level.

^^^ This, so much this. Everything he just said is exactly what I've been learning in audio engineering school, and I can attest to the accuracy of this information.

Also, some people like to have the two tweeters and your head make an equilateral triangle, rather than being 30 degrees. And having them be at ear level and pointed at your head is very important, because high frequencies are very directional. Bass can fill a whole room no matter what you do with the speakers, but you need the tweeters pointing at you to hear them well.

Another thing... don't just hang a bunch of blankets on the wall and call that sound treatment. That's a huge thing and there's so much more to it than just blankets and foam. Blankets and foam will only absorb high frequencies, and if you do that, you'll be left with mud.

As for the amp and the keyboard... I don't record from my amp, but if I did, I'd try to put it in the closest thing to a sound isolation booth that I can manage, and mic it, and put the mic into the monitors. I like to have my keyboard just slightly to the side so that I can turn my head to look at my computer without much trouble, but if it's small enough, you should try to manage a way to have it on your desk or something.

Try experimenting with stuff. Don't spend so much time planning or thinking that you never come up with something good.

.

What I meant to describe is the speakers should be pointed 30 degrees off the walls to your left and right (forming said equilateral triangle), it would also mean 60 degrees of the wall you face (which is how I should have worded it).

Like you said its best not to custom treat your room with blankets or small pieces of foam as it will 'unbalnce' your room even more then it already is. If you want sound treatment save up a lot of money and be sure to equally treat all the frequencies.

Ultimately you will never get a perfect room so set your equipment up in whatever way is most comfortable for you and spend time actually making music.

Thanx, Ill keep those things in mind.

I know that. I may not know everything about acoustics, but I know that its complicated as hell.
I just wanted to get an idea of what might work and what wont. I dont want to drill to many new holes in the walls to experiment with speakerplacement :)

(btw, dont take this post as "stop posting, I dont want your input anymore". Any new input is apreciated  )
