Examples? Cause I honestly have no clue what minimalism is, beyond art.

If anyone can figure out what genre this is, please tell me, cause I have no clue. :D

I'm minimalist by design, and sometimes my jazz gets pretty minimalist, but that's about it.

Not quite. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimal_music

I'm talking about stuff like Steve Reich and Phillip Glass, whether you like to listen to it or compose it. Just wondering if there's anyone around here into that sort of thing.

Minimalism is either a love or hate thing with me.

For example, I love Steve Reich's Drumming, but I don't like his New York Counterpoint.

I love Phillip Glass' Koyaanisqatsi, but I'm not a fan of much else he does...

I guess, like all music, you'll find ones you like and ones you don't!

I'm a big fan of Minimal Music. But judging from the thread title, I thought you were talking about the electronic genre...

I dont think technique is the place for this...

But Regardless, I'm not quite sure what you're talking about. Are you talking about minimal music, or the genre minimal [house]?

Minimal music. Didn't even know there was a minimal house genre. And I guess Technique might not be the best place for this, after all. It would have been nice to see how people incorporate minimalism into their own music, but it doesn't seem like anyone here does.

I'm a fan of minimalism (depending on the piece--"It's Gonna Rain" and "Come Out" are interesting to listen to, but not very enjoyable), but I don't intentionally or consciously incorporate its techniques/idioms into my work. (Well, not in anything that I have anywhere near finished and have worked on within the last year, anyway.)

That said, I do think electronic dance music in general has something in common with minimalism insofar as it tends to favor extensive repetition of short, simple motifs with modal/pentatonic scales, and it often builds or decreases intensity by adding or removing "layers". The similarity's probably more obvious with "techno" than most other genres, though.

Ooh, actually, check out this article (which I just found) that looks at some of the links between house/techno and minimalism: Digital Discipline: Minimalism in House and Techno (.doc). (Alternatively, there's sort of a preview of the article's first page here, with audio examples.

I love minimalism. It is one of my favorite types of music to compose, though I do not have any examples offhand. I listen to a lot of minimalist music as well.

I don't like electronic minimalism. I like it in non-electronic minimalism but EDM Minimal just sounds like it's starving for that complete sound.
