Consistency for Kontakt Fsctory Orchestral Library

Postby WavesOfParadox » 21 Aug 2012 10:45

I bought the full version of Kontakt 5. The orchestral library sounds pretty nice, but there is inconsistency among the different articulations for some instruments.

Here is a test with the clarinet:

The articulations, in order, are sustain, fortepiano, sforzando, then staccato.

So...what's the problem? They sound like the articulations mentioned.

Well, when immediately switching between them, the airiness the other articulations is very apparent and inconsistent from the sustain articulation.

That's kind of how it goes. Sustain is at around mf, fp is as is because piano is much quieter, thus you'll hear more of the air travel, same goes for sfz, and the staccato is around mp.

Sounds okay to me o.o

Hmm, it makes sense from the difference in dynamics. But what if I need a shorter articulation with a piano dynamic? The sustain articulation's response isn't good enough for fast 16th notes or anything.

Then play the staccato quieter? If I remember correctly, the Kontakt Factory Instruments have dynamics set to velocity on the ol' keyboard. So the lighter you hit the note, the quieter it is.

And the fast semiquavers with the sustain is mainly just the limitation of the vst. Try using staccato for fast semiquavers and see how that goes.

You can also increase the level of the note for each articulation, increasing the "punch" of the note that way. Also, you can adjust the sound nob to cut out some of that airiness if you wish.
