Stuck on first track.

Postby Blitztank » 16 Aug 2012 12:19

So... I'm stuck, also i want a better start. But this is what i got, i don't have a single idea, and those i have, isn't that good. So do MLR have any tips for when you get stuck on a track? Btw, i would also add some extra sounds on this, but i don't have any ideas for that either.

Remember this song is not for feedback or any kind. The song is just an example.
If you don't understand the half of the stuff i'm writing. It's probably because of my bad english.

Getting inspiration for music is a bit of a sketchy topic to explain because it comes differently to everybody. When I start a song, I don't go in with a melody, a beat, or anything like that usually; I go in with a concept. Think about something you like, whatever it is (PONIES FOR EXAMPLE) and work from there. Try and capture that feeling in what you are doing. I suck at explaining shit so if you found this confusing I don't blame you :S

Now, as for that WIP...

1) Use some fills between your drums; hi-hats, tambourines, what have you. Add more variety to the percussion. Hats also sound good if you alternate between two different hats, or "shuffling" hats. Velocity (essentially the volume) is your best friend with this kind of stuff, so try and give different parts more/less emphasis.

2) A dry mix is a sad mix. I can tell that synth has NO processing on it. It would sound good if you stuck some reverb on the synth, maybe a short delay. Experiment with different effects, try something new! Can't comment on the drums because I don't have my DJ headphones (I'm at school :P)

3) I never realized there was a bass until I turned up my volume. Make that shit louder.

Okay! Welp, still better than my first track :P

When I'm stuck on a track, I usually either leave it alone for awhile (a few hours+) or I listen to some music around what I want and get some ideas from there. Trust me, it'll get easier to get ideas as you become better, but for now you might have to slug it out.
