Tutorial on mixing technique/using effects.

Postby Orchestral_Design » 13 Sep 2011 11:05

Hey guys, Being that Im a recording arts major and part of the audio engineering society, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in watching me do a livestream about how to use EQ, compression, and panning. The reason I ask is that if I get enough responses (meaning about 10 or so) I'll schedule a time to do a 1 hour tutorial on mixing house/trance music, as well as orchestral music and impart the knowledge I have so you all can get better sounding mixes. Also, tell me if you want me to cover anything else (using reverb for example) in the comments. So its up to you guys if you want me to impart some Audio Engineer Knowledge from someone whose had real world experience in the industry.

One last thing, I know some of you are incredibly talented in mixing, Im not bashing how your mix sounds I just want to share my knowledge, thats all.

I'd love that! Mixing is something I totally suck at, with a VENGEANCE. Don't host it this thursday, though, Bill Nye is coming to my school to talk about science.

I'm certainly interested!

It sounds interesting! I can't pretend to have industry experience in mixing but I run the plugin company 'Airwindows' (mac audio units for Logic, GarageBand etc)
I don't feel comfortable revealing that in ALL fandoms I'm in, but I feel a little bit safer 'crossing the streams' among bronies. Anyway, any of my brony plugin users would already have spotted me for Applejack, they tell me to slow down and quit workin' now and then :)
If this search works, it'll point to some of the Gearslutz threads that have to do with my work- drat, it died- search on 'airwindows' in the title of threads at http://www.gearslutz.com :)
I would love to help you any way I can, and would also love to see how you use effects- mostly I just make and sell 'em, it's for others to get good at USIN' em :)

That would be amazing! Learning from someone who's actually been taught how to do this would be awesome!

Would the tutorial cover pitch shifting to some degree? I'd watch it even if it didn't, I'm just wondering.

If you mean pitch shifting like melodyne or auto tune, then no. I've used them before in studio work, but I don't own a copy for my home computer.

What do you need to know? Outside of the real tutorial that is? I don't own it either but it sounds like either OD or me could answer questions :) I don't want to step on Orchestral_Design's hooves at all, it's just really really really hard for me not to try ta be helpful XD

Nothing in particular. The only experience I've really had with pitch shifting has been Cubase's integrated module, and I haven't even used that one much.

I'm def watching this when it comes out!

Couldn't it be recorded as well? 7pm EST equals 1am Central European and 3am Moscow time, so it's not likely that Mike, Bartek and me will be glad to sacrifice the sleep at night, but if they two agree, I will not mind as well.
This is going to start just after the Remix War, I guess.

Not to be pressing, but you weren't planning on airing it this Saturday, were you?

Because I'm gonna be absolutely swamped then (university move-in day!), but after that I should be fine.
