Loss of Creativity

Postby thatguyzeke » 07 Aug 2012 10:27

I consider myself very VERY new to music production, and as such I've been trying to learn everything I can.
From developing my own sounds as best I can, to production and mixing and EQ methods and song structure and development. However it feels like, while trying to include that in my music making process, I've lost something I had when I started.
That untouched creative feeling is muddled now, (different then a block, during a kind of block, I can barely create anything) and I keep trying to get back to it. It comes in burst here and there, but I was wondering if anyone else had felt this before?
Is it maybe because I'm trying to learn too much too fast? Maybe I'm going about production and technical aspects all wrong and mixing them with the creative too much?

Has anyone experienced this before here? How do you get around it?

It's ok, It happens to almost everyone, even me, and it's going to happen quite often in your music career as well.

If you struggling for creativity, just take a break, It might mean your juicing it up too much, try doing something besides music or whatever your losing your creativity in, trust me, inspiration is everywhere.

I find learning more music theory inspires me to do more things, but I may be a slightly odd case. Listen to a a lot of music in great variety. Listen to artists that influence you AND branch out. Also read; there is lots of free literature out there: http://www.gutenberg.org/ https://www.fimfiction.net/

Oh god this. My two strategies:

1. Try a new genre or synth. This can stimulate creativity, if only through trying to understand the new thing.
2. Emulate something. A lot of my favorite songs I've done came out of trying to emulate a song or artist and coming up with something new and original in the process. My song Discord's Game came out of me trying to emulate cyrricky. I'm not sure what it became, but it definitely wasn't that.

feel like expanding into a new field using new plugins. plugins don’t work so you spend hours trying to find solution. get extremly mad then vent.

Honestly this before anything...since our scene is concept based and not genre based you can get and incorporate ideas from the show in to the music you make from a single scene form a single episode. I keep an idea queue so that when i get get ideas for a song I keep them for when i have a free spot. I currently have WAY more ideas then i have time. Do bounce around genres as that too helps keep your music interesting and varied.

When I feel like I'm starting to lose that creative flow, I usually close out of my DAW, and just go about life as I usually do, listening to a lot of music, talking with friends, and watching TV.
Usually I'll hear, see, or do something that'll bring that creative feeling back. :D
