A genre for a beginner?

Postby Blitztank » 03 Aug 2012 11:21

Okay, title says it all. Also it would be nice, if you could write down some of the Plug-ins, tuts, tips for the genre, that you would recommend.
If you don't understand the half of the stuff i'm writing. It's probably because of my bad english.

Well, i've already tried some classical, and it was a bit too difficult for me. I was just thinking if there was any less difficult genres to start with.

I'd say classical, possibly more so than some other genres, can be as simple or as complex as you want it.

Don't focus on genres. Get an idea and write it in.

My tip to you is to learn some music theory if you haven't, and don't be afraid to make your music overly simplistic. Speaking from experience, you'll work your way up to more complex things as you learn more theory, style, and general quirks that help the music flow.

Sometimes (For the most) my ideas doesn't really turn out as i wanted them to. But i guess i just gonna try, until i get something that is satisfying me?

Songs (at least for me) never turn out exactly how you want them to. Your first song will not be the way you heard it in your head. If I had my first song I'd link it to you, but sadly I can't find it. It was terrible. Now I would like to think I'm a little better at making music, although I'm not sure if that's really true. Don't give up. plz.

Okay thanks for the support. I will try, although it won't be the most satisfying.

Yeah we can't really just write up a tutorial for an easy genre for you, none are specifically "easy". They all will take time to master. You need to create a song idea, do it in a style or a genre that YOU like, for the particular DAW and vst's you hopefully have, and then you have to figure it out how to use elements that match or digress from that genre to make something listenable. There's only so much this forum can spoonfeed people. Take a look on this forum for past threads for tutorials (there's plenty) and youtube for genre specific ones that are hopefully in a DAW that you have and use.

Now correct me if i'm wrong, but won't it also be a good idea to try alot of genres etc. To find the most entertaining (for me) kind of music to produce?

Totally up to you. make music for yourself first and foremost. If you like exploring genres by all mean do it (i personally like to) or you can settle down with one or two styles and develop an audience that likely will expect you to produce in that style. A style is something you should develop after you produce for awhile so just keep your mind open at the beginning and find out what you like and want to do.

emulate your heroes
that's how a lot of famous musicians today got to where they were
you'll eventually develop your own style off of theirs

Well, what are you good at? If you aren't good at mixing/mastering, then maybe insane drumstep isn't for you. (That's literally the exact mistake I made. I decided that it would be a great idea for my first song to be a crossbreed/hybrid genre. It wasn't.) If you can't write melodies, then don't choose something like house or trance. It all just boils down to what you "can" or "can't" do.

It's always going to be better and faster for you to choose a genre you love over one that is subjectively 'easier'.

That said, if you like melodies - give house and trance a try. If you don't really care for them, try electro or dubstep.

See, that is a question! I love almost every single genre, Glitch Hop, Classical, DnB, Dubstep, Drumstep, Hardstyle etc etc. So should i just pick randomly?

Yeah! Just pick something and run with it for a while. If you get bored, there's a ton of other genres out there to try out :)
