A few questions.

Postby Tantalus » 26 Jul 2012 22:08

1. What genre is this song?

B (or 2). How would I go about making said genre, I really enjoy it. (It doesn't seem completely like dubstep, then again, I barely know anything about all the different genres EDM has...)

3 (or C). Is there anybody that would be willing to answer my seemingly endless questions about music making or specifically creating this genre (and won't mind if I sound like an idiot at times)

I'm not sure if these are correct but:

1: I'ts indeed dubstep. But a special type of dubstep called liquid dubstep and/or original UK Style. This is the dubstep that came before brostep (ya know with like skrillex, flux pavilion, excision, etc.) This style is alot more chill and focus more on harmonies and softer synths and lower wobble basslines, as well as trance-like effects, in comparision to brostep's americanized guitar sounding wobbles and overall wild energy. This is the kind of dubstep (in my opinion) you can safely listen in your car without fear of crashing.

2: Get (for now a demo) of a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) Such as Ableton, Pro Tools, Reason, FL Studio, Cubase, and Logic (if you have a MAC). Then proceed to learn about the program and different techniques (I learned from youtube and other music making forums) in creating dubstep as well as acquiring some free samples and VSTs (Virtual Studio Technology). This is going to take time, and you may or may not like it, which is why I say get a demo first so you won't have to waste too much money on it. Buy it only when you feel comfortable enough with the program and you know this process doesn't bore you.

3. Not sure. :T
Dubstep = Earth Pony
Electro House = Unicorn
Drum & Bass = Pegasus

Now, I know you probably didn't know this but I do know the basics, I am new to making music (Going on something like 3 weeks of just messing around) and I appreciate you making sure that I do know the basics. I just wanted to know the specifics of the genre. Thanks.

Ooooh, messing around is a great way to get started. Just...make it a meaningful mess-around. Try and picture yourself, where you want to be in, say, six months. Now, do some research, and find the means to get there. Now, with a decent workstation, a solid mindset, and plenty of ambition...The time for messing around has come!

Really, messing around will serve, not only for inspiration, but also for knowledge, both pure, and knowledge of what you need to learn. When you're fed up on messing about, you could always try to do something *giggle* serious...

I consider myself in this stage.
Constructive criticism is more than welcome. I embrace it.

I rarely make any sense when I post from my phone. And I post from my phone.

If you want to make music of a certain genre, study music of that genre, plain and simple. Wikipedia also has pretty good descriptions of most EDM genres to get you started. (You still need to study the music itself, though.)

It's not traditional uk dubstep as they didn't do female vocalists back in the day, there's still plenty of wubs in there (more a modern thing), and not a lot of dub. Maybe a modern take of what's coming out in the uk vs the us in commercial dubstep but that's about it.

It's a shame that no one has done any Joker styled Purple Sound dubstep for Twilight or Wonky dubstep for Derpy...

Instead people go for the brostep more often then nought.
