How to get "Interesting" sub-bass?

Postby soup2504 » 22 Jul 2012 19:38

Okay, listening to some ear sex gave me inspiration for something, but, um... How do interesting sub-bass? Here are two examples of what I mean by that...

(The sub-bass in the 2nd song starts around 2:02, just so you knowwww)

My idea of sub-bass is just taking 3xosc, moving down to the lower noted, and EQ'ing it. That is literally it. But for what I want to do, I need something a bit different, and interesting. I want something that kinda "wobbles" like the first song (Although I don't want to call it wobbling for whatever reasons) and just something... Different.

Any tips :s?

Yes, that I already figured out shortly after I posted this, but I want something that sounds different, as seen in the examples. I COULD just make some bass or whatever and just lower the volume of it and EQ it, but people will yell at me ;_;

You could also just make a regular bass and LP filter it a lot, that's what the second song you linked sounds like to me.

What you want to do is take a standard reese (aka detuned saw) and low pass it, done.

The first one's like a tremolo or two oscs beating against each other- the second one is pitch swoops, cool! It's not a note as much as it is 'bass gestures'.

All I do is,

1. Get subsonic out if you don't own fancy vst's like massive or sytrus (If you want it, go google "itchy vst pack")
2. Add Fruity love philter out and lfo it (alternately use gross beat to sidechain it if it doesn't work)
3. Use filters and low pass
4. Fruity bass boost to 60Hz
5. Soundgoodizer
6. (optional) do crazy sh*t on the piano roll, slide, glissando, portmanteau etc.

You can do this with every vst, even 3xOSC. I just used massive because it's the most convenient one and almost everyone has it.

I almost forgot to say 3xosc

How can I leave out one of my most favorite vst? (no really, I use it in each and every one of my songs)

Also, in 3xosc, just turn off 1 osc and set the other two to sine wave, then set the root note to C6.
And turn the Attack down on envelope until it's flat,
