HEADPHONES.

Postby NightColt » 05 Sep 2011 10:03

Can anyone recommend a good set of headphones for mixing and EQing and whatnot? Because I'm tired of swapping between three different pairs only to find out that the bass is too low or something like that over and over again.

Well, i'm not really sure about the best headphones around, though i've been through a lot of pairs.

Right at the moment however, I'm rocking a pair of Astro A40's and they work really well. They're microphone compatible and equipped with surround sound.

Sorry that this was the only help I could give.

I think you should look for some Sennheiser headphones: I've got HD 201, that are broken, but still sound good as new, and when they were new they were like perfect to me. I also Have two Pairs of MX 170's I think, (Bought for About 8 $) And Are To me like Perfect ones to listen with, when unavailable to use headphones. (apart the basses, not so punchy, after all, these are cheap headphones)

These headphones are legit. Great sound quality, very comfortable and stylish, and really durable. And pretty inexpensive, too! Renard (who is sort of a big deal I guess?) suggested them to Jackle App, who in turn suggested them to me, and I love them.

So two famous people use them! JACKLE APP IS FAMOUS and I enjoy them too.

Don't know if they're studio quality, per se. But they work very well for me.

Ultrasone DJ One PRO. Made in Germany These are phenomenal headphones! I own a pair and the sound quality is simply superb, the highs are crisp and clear, and the midrange is not muddy. It also has a surprisingly good amount of low end reproduction to them as well, but there not bass heavy. There be best I've used in a while.

Best headphones for EQ'n and stuff is by far the Audio Technica ATH-M50. Completely flat and they sound amazing

dat clarity

Fairly pricy, mine cost me £125, so shell out if you really want too

I kin vouch for Sennheiser HD280pro (sealed) and HD600 (open-air). Be careful gettin' the HD650 because they are said to be a lot darker than the HD600 and would make you mix too bright :)

280's bass is a lot muddier than the 600 and it's a lot less revealing and natural but that stands to reason...

Also remember mixing on headphones is real deceptive, but it's certainly the most cost-effective way to hear what you're doin' :)

I was always under the impression that trying the sound out on different headphones and systems was a good thing, to make sure it sounded good on each of them.

Anyway, I use a pair of standard Sony MDR-XD200 stereo headphones and they were fairly inexpensive, like $50. I've also got a pair of apple headphones and a set of aRoc SBP-900's, which I wouldn't suggest because they were $10 and instead of being proper stereo, it's setup to be mono with a stereo imaging built in. Really though you should be fine if you get a proper set of studio's that are anything from $50 up. They obviously don't all sound the same, but they never and it doesn't really matter if they're good enough.

Also imo speakers are the best way to mix, but doing that you need a really good set of speakers and usually you need to set up noise dampeners around your room/studio, so it's not always the best option.

Speakers is a lot HARDER to get into a workin' mixing setup. Though I should mention a secret (at least among ol' rock ponies and such), you don't have to have MASTERIN' style speakers to work.

You kin get powered Avantones and check the bass/highs on headphones- http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun10/a ... ctives.htm all of that there is true, about 'em. I have em and swear by 'em :) O' course if you are workin' some genre like dubstep or whatever there is that has really important subs, they'll be pretty useless, but most home speakers would be just as useless...

I've got Sony MDR-DX200's and they are literally the most comfortable thing I have ever put on my head, ever. The sound quality is very good, but a little lacking on the bass, I'd recommend getting the bass-boosted version which only costs a little more. The best part? They only cost me like 35 bucks.

If you want to make sure a mix sounds good, stick like three different pairs of headphones, at least, into your computer to make sure it will sound good for everyone.

Ok, If you really want to spend the big bucks, GET THESE: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MVEC10/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=head04-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000MVEC10

AMAZING sound! By far the best headphones I've ever heard. If you don't want to spend quite as much as the Denon AH-D5000, I hear the AH-D2000 is perfect for mastering and whatnot.

I know. However, this was kind of handy, as I'm in the market for new headphones!

Don't get the Sennheiser HD5xx headphones. They are absolutely amazing for listening, but for mixing they are a huge no.

IMO no headphones in the world can replace a nice stereo system, when you make the mixdown.
