Quality sounds from massive?

Postby KillerAmp » 28 Jun 2012 14:14

So ive been playing around with massive and i just cant figure out how to get a sound quality to what i quite want,
when i get a sound, its almost too sharp/edgy when im trying to get it to sound more rounded out,
a good example of what im trying to achieve is in Omnipony's She's an Alarm Clock (She's A Pony Remix)

im trying to achieve that siren/screeching sound used in his drop.

As always im learning more and more from you guys, and im slowly getting close to where i feel i can actually release a track! (i have really high standards for myself, no idea if thats good or bad though :S)

Im just finding that when i use massive, and i start getting layers, they all sound so sharp, and im not quite sure what i'm missing.
if you need any more information just ask :D

Learn what exactly different knobs do on the synthesizer, and how the synthesizer works from the bottom up.
For instance, it's nice to have a feel for what ring modulation does to your sound, but without knowing what ring modulation actually is it's hard to know when you should be using it for the specific sound you are building, and knowing if it will be detrimental in the long run, which is hard to know if you don't know what ring modulation specifically is. With this knowledge, you can get right in and start building your sound up with very little guessing/testing around to get what you want.

After doing some studying on how synthesizers work, I got into Massive, and instantly I knew how a LOT of how the stuff works, and I had some mean sounds in no time. Shoot, the default 3Osc in FL can do some crazy stuff by itself.

So my best advise I can give is to learn how synths work, and also study the Massive manual so you know how to use the strings specific to that synth. I know it comes with Massive, whether it is in a physical copy or the pdf (depending if you bought it on CD or in download).

If you already know this stuff, then pretend I didn't post this :|

thanks, i really didnt know too much about the ring modulation before, im toying around with it to see what types of sounds it can help make, ill probably have to mess with the operator in ableton and just turn off the 4th osc so i can get a feel for a 3 oscillator synth because that's what ive been using, as far as the manual, its probably burried somewhere in my downloads folder, but if i find it that'll probably help out for learing how massive works :D
Where would be a good place to find basics on how 3 oscillator synths work? because i know how to work with 1 osc, but thats not going to give a full sound, no matter how many voices i add to it. as far as LFO and Envelops i know how to use those pretty well in massive, its mostly the different kind of filters and different kinds of waves (beyond basic saw, sin, and square ones)

The ring modulation thing was just for an example about knowing how things work, instead of clicking an option and then wondering why something just got muffled, or whatever.

I'm going to go ahead and take this opportunity to ask what ring modulation does.

Learn basic synth programming.
Try to copy presets: Open one instance of Massive, open preset, open second instance of massive and start setting knobs in their places.
Massive tutorials, the most obvious options.
