Structure of DJ friendly "Bass music"

Postby 5COPY » 27 Jun 2012 17:34

This vid helped me a lot about understand how it worked and how to make a song DJ friendly and Dancefloor friendly. And I think it was too good not to be shared. They're talking about dubstep but the concept is the same for most "bass genres" if you can call that kind of music that atleast from my view. (Electro House, Dubstep, Moombahcore, Drumstep etc.)

edit: Also maybe I should have posted this in sharing forum instead? oh well.

Yeah I remember this.
The only thing that I don't like is what they say about the second drop. I don't like just copying and pasting the drop just because a dj won't play it. That's lazy. I always add some element or new part to the second drop.
Well I'm pretty much done with this site (it wasn't about the April Fool's joke I actually loved that). If for some reason somebody wants to contact me or something (not like any of you even care lol):

Well of course that is a good idea since a lot of this time of music have gotten popular by listeners that just listen to it alone. But I myself try not to do way too much. Because they're kind of right about not spending too much time on second drop.

This looks like the right topic since it is teaching technique.

Thanks for sharing this video. Nice to see Dodge & Fuski putting out tutorials. They were the first dubstep act to really blow me away.

They illustrated a very good song structure, and while I generally ignore all of it in my own construction (I'm a rule breaker!) its important to know this for both folks looking to create an easily meshed song, and for DJs who would like to learn the proper way to count when setting up a new track so that they get their timing right. 16 is your magic number.

Now days DJs can get by song structure issues with a couple of different techniques thanks to controllers and software. For example, a short outro can easily be dealt with by looping, and a melodic intro (like what they were complaining about near the start) can easily be played on top of a four kick loop or the outro of another track.

And yeah, its true that the second drop rarely gets played, unless the DJ knows how to properly incorporate two drop sections over top of each other, or some other seamless way to navigate back to the track later on in their mix.

Besides that, this is a very nice rule of thumb for constructing a song.
