HELP! Pwease!

Postby KillerAmp » 27 Jun 2012 11:24

Hey KillerAmp here :D ,
Im new to the mylittleremix scene and really would like to know both how to start on this site (such as getting connected with everyone via skype or steam or something) and how to get started with sound development.

When i say sound development i mean how to program synthesis such as Massive, FM8, and Operator (if it helps i use Ableton Live 8 and know my way around the program pretty well)

As far as making songs, im fully capable of doing it with presets, but it makes me feel like its not my work, and i also find myself searching all through the presets to look for the right sound, interupting the work flow.

Any help in either category would be great :D

Welcome to MLR, just like any other site post in the introduction area of the forum and keep posting any where you can (don't spam, I hate spam).

I don't personally use any of those synths but honestly the best way to learn a synth is to spend time with it. Start with any preset, random or your favorite it doesn't matter, any just keep twisting knobs and messing around with the routing and parameters. You can watch youtube tutorials to help you navigate the synth but the fastest and most efective way is to use the thing for hours on end.

Another tip I suggest to people is to read the manual. When I get a new synth I mess around with it for a day or two and then once I start to get a feel for it I read the manual and thats where I learn most about some of the 'hidden' features and possibilities.

Do your best to stay away from presets (those that you don't at all edit). You won't learn anything about synthesis using them that way.

Thanks for the advice! sorry if i seem like a noob but i never really used any fourms besides this one but i do understand not to spam :P

ill be sure to check out the manual for the synthesizers! ive looked at them before but its been awhile.

also just wondering if you have any recommendations for synthesis for a more mid-high range, since currently i have a collection of lower synthesizers, and i've got a spending limit of around 300 dollars so really any collection of synthesizers should be in my price range :D

ill also go check out the introduction thread, i really had no idea where to find it, makes sence it was in general discussion though now that i think about it *facepalm* Thanks for being the first responce i get on MLR, it really means a lot :3

Are you looking at buying a new synth? I am a little confused by the wording.

If you are looking at buying please tell us what you have already in terms of sound gear and f you are looking for hardware or software.

well i was looking for a vst plugin that would produce good synth sounds in the mid to high range,

the4thImpulse wrote:and f you are looking for hardware

but now that you mention hardware i would love to know what would be some good hardware for a beginner, im looking for one to increase the flow of production for house and dubstep music.

as far as synths i currently have, its just Massive, FM8, and razor, all native instruments,
ive also got a relatively good midi keyboard
i want something like omnisphere (as far as creative freedom and quality go) but really do not have 500 dollars to spend to get omnisphere.

I would advise against getting any hardware synth under $500, the quality just isn't there.

Really any plugin can make great sounds in all ranges of frequencies and I know FM8 and Massive can handle it all great, I think you need to spend more time with them and maybe even switch up your workflow in them.

You could also look into buying a DAW, soundcard, or studio headphones to help you out more then a new synth would.

If I had to suggest one it would be Z3ta+, its the best soft synth (in my opinion) I've owned and used.

Hi m8, my name's Aaron, pleasure to meet you. Feel free to add me on skype under riskyshins. Drop the IRC now and then, we're a pretty nice bunch. Aside from being friendly, I can't imagine many other ways to get connected. Try remixing other people's work or participating in some album projects. (The Lesser Knowns II would be a good place to start! http://www.mylittleremix.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=3276)

4th impulse gave you some really good advice. Just play with it for a few hours, read the manual, then never stop playing with it. If you want to make Massive your bich, do the hell out of it!

I, personally, think it's worthwhile doing some reading on the subject. I know it's boring as hell (and I still need to do more to follow my own advice, here), but I find it worth it. You might check out How to Make a Noise, which is available (legitimately!) as a free PDF. It talks about making patches for six specific synths, but the basic techniques should be more or less transferable to many other synths, especially if you have the likes of Massive and FM8.

There are a number of video tutorials that can be helpful too. If you search YouTube for something like "how to make" or "how to recreate" and some sound/audio keyword (for example, here I just used "sound" literally), you'll find a bunch of tutorials that might be interesting. Another useful example might be adding in the name of a DAW or specific synth. E.g., "how to make ableton", "how to make massive", "how to make fm8".

that's a good attitude to have, it's much more fulfilling when you know your sounds are your own. but those presets can help you learn. load one and start tweeking the settings. that's one of fastest ways you'll learn as to why their pre"set" the way they are.

Yeah thats what i discovered and is what ive been doing recently, and ive taken some, and changed them so much that i can feel like theyre my own, the issue now is that the sounds ive made are more dubstep dropish sounding ones

yet i have NO IDEA how the flow of a dubstep song should go, i can create all the way up to the drop, then when i start messing around with a drop, it just sounds empty like its missing something, and ive tryed reverb, adding sub-bass, adding delay, ect.

im starting to think its my drums, but i cant figure out how to make them really pop to the front of the track, they always seem to just fade to the back
