A question about MIDI

Postby WavesOfParadox » 27 Jun 2012 10:34

So, I use LMMS, and I'm using a VST with multiple tracks within the VST. Well, I'm supposed to be able to have different tracks I have in LMMS play using the other instruments in the one VST? I'm supposed to use MIDI for this, right? I'm having trouble with that. I don't want to have more than 1 of the same VST because I can't figure this out.

I might suggest adding separate VSTs for your separate instruments, and have them on separate tracks (a string VST for your strings on your strings track, a piano VST for your piano on your piano track, etc.). If you have 2 stringed tracks, add on whatever string VST you have on both of them (you may have to load the VSTs separately, can't remember.)

That's how I run both LMMS and FL :?

So that's all I can do? That seems like a big waste of RAM to use a six instrument VST for only one.

It's one of the reasons why I stopped using DSK Overture, now I just use soundfonts for my orchestral compositions.

I use Garritan Aria player, mostly because my soundfonts are still on my other computer and I'm too lazy to transfer them or re-download them. :|

Good news, I figured out a solution. (finally...)

I found in Reaper the Input/Output menu, there is an option to make one track receive from another. I adjusted the MIDI output from the main track and the receiving track and the output in the VST. This did the trick and I'm sure it would work in other multitrack VST's such as DSK Overture. The problem is I can't seem where to do this in LMMS. Just another reason to buy Reaper.

You should also be able to make other MIDI tracks "children" of the track with the VSTi. (Y'know, click the little icon on the bottom right part of the track controls, below the "track number". Put the child(dren) track(s) below, and click its icons until it changes to the "track is last in the folder" icon.) I find that a little more convenient, if you don't need to use the separate 1-16 MIDI channels--and it keeps the related tracks grouped together.

(You can still use this technique if you need the MIDI going to separate channels, but you have to tweak some other stuff, so it's not THAT much more convenient than using the Input/Output menu.)
