How do you rap good?

Postby ChromaticChaosPony » 17 Jun 2012 15:25

I entered the brony rap tournament on impulse(here: http://mylittleremix.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2943), and I have never rapped in my life. I have no idea what the hell to do about anything from lyrics to my voice. I know NOTHING.

Please post advice into oblivion.

You'll want to study some rappers you like, brony or not, and try to do things they do. I don't mean copy their rhyme scheme or their lyrics, but see how they use metaphors and how they construct their rap. I can't help much in the way of actually rapping, as I haven't done it yet, but I want to get into it as well, and that's how I plan to start.

Also, get a topic to work off of, but don't feel like you have to relate everything to that topic. Go off on tangents if you can make it flow well.

Good luck!
My goal is to be capable of making any kind of music that strikes my fancy, and do it well.

Building on what Kyoga said, rap with conviction! Lazy rapping just sounds terrible. To give you an idea, it's like blandly reading a script off a page in monotone instead of acting. Whatever you do, whatever style you choose to do, make sure you do it with as much conviction as you can muster.

Write a wrap about drugs, sex, women(Or men, to fuck with people), money, partying, drinking.

That is all.

Okay, jokes aside, I have no clue :>

Writing, no idea.

Technique, I just listen to a bunch of Lulz and Mic (only rap I'll listen to) and copy them, I did that and I think I can rap alright (I probably can't, but I can sing/talk fast)
I like music /)*(\

Kyoga pretty much covered everything regarding technique. I may try rapping at some point, purely because it would be hilarious with my voice.

I don't mean to contradict a lot of artists here, but hear me out...

COPY A RAPPER.

I'm not kidding. When I heard 'Wu-Tang Clan's - Triumph' I memorized that entire song and could recite it at a moments notice...

Here's what happened:

There's like 5-6 guys on that track. Each one has a unique style that's different from the other. They all use different rhyme structures and metaphor styles, and they all can rap... VERY well.

When you get a song like that in your system, you find the one thing that unifies their flow... their dedication to the beat.

Regardless of style, or lyrics, or whatever, that adherence to the beat is why rhythm and poetry work so well on that track. Once you can flow solidly to a beat, you'll eventually find your own voice and style that suits you.

So no, I'm not saying 'copy another rapper's style'... but by being able to perform in another rappers style you automatically begin to train your mouth to have the capability to drop verses quickly and efficiently.

Another suggestion is the Anthem by the Wake-Up Show All-Stars... it has cats like Xzibit, Eminem, Tech-9, KRS-One, and a handful of other rappers with VERY different styles.

That's just what helped influence me big time.

GOOD LUCK!

Just throwing this out there, when I try to start rapping, it's gonna be with the All-Stars mix of 'Earthquake' by Labrinth. Tinie Tempah, Kano, Wretch 32, and Busta Rhymes. Quite a challenge :D

I JUST listened to that... that's a ridiculously challenging song... but if you can learn to spit that clearly... you have all my respect.

i know this isnt what the thread is about but if you are planning to record it and put it in a track, then what you should do is record your rap once, then record it again, and time them up, it gives it a fuller sound.

as far as just rapping, its all in the practice, and its all in the feeling, you need need NEED confidence if you want to rap, and basically everything Kyoga said too.
good luck :D

Thank you all. I think I can learn a lot from your advice. I'll try not to suck in these brony rap competitions, and I will practice. I'll probably start with trying to make a dubstep rap. I'm just comfortable with dubstep. Either that or a parody rap because I have a sick sense of humor.

parody raps would actually be a good place to start, because it will strain your creativity, and you'll learn the parts of a rap and you'll expand your rhyming ability
