Is it normal (q. regarding sound quality)

Postby Matthew N. » 17 May 2012 11:01

Hey peeps,

I've always been wondering about the following: Is it normal for any track to sound much better on any audio player than in the actual composing software, regardless of having equalizers active or not? Or is it the actual conversion into a high quality mp3 file that does this?

No. Or at least it shouldn't.

When encoding you can only achieve same or lesser quality compared to original. With mp3 even high quality is still lossy.

...hmmmm... On the other hoof try rendering both .mp3 (like you already did) and .wav (44.1 kHz, 16 bit [lossless]) and tell if there's a difference. You see, mp3 uses psychoacoustic compression, meaning that quality is reduced from parts which are not easily audible. Also transients may produce side effects. Perhaps those make it somehow better, although it should make it sound worse. I dunno. Test! For science! :)

The sound is not only about the equalizers..)
Choose one or more of the following:
1.)Your Computer's sound card sucks. (Play the song in the same daw on a different computer)
2.) Your DAW's sound output Sucks ( try a different daw/play the song in WMP)
3.) The MP3 player also has some kind of processing that makes the song sound "Cleaner" or something (Try a different mp3 player without soundgoodizer on the master channel)
4.) Your DAW sucks (I don't think so, otherwise the final output would also suck)
5.) The mp3 compression does something about frequencies fighting each other (Try a lossless compression)
6.) Computers Hate You (Nothing You can do about it, unfortunately)
