How do... GOOD electric guitar in FLS

Postby soup2504 » 12 May 2012 08:41

Alright alright alright, is there any way I can get FL Slayer to sound WONDAFUL? I know FL keys can turn really sexy ( See : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QGqrMWt_Ks ), so I'm wondering if there's any way I can get FL Slayer to turn sexy. As of now, I'm doing all kinds of things like EQ'ing, using fruity flanger and all that good stuff, but I can't seem to get the sound I want.

If I can get something along the lines of http://silvahound.bandcamp.com/track/magical-friends at 3:03, I would love that. I'm not saying I must imitate the sound, but something similar would be nice.

And yes, this is kinda important >_>

Wow...I really have no idea how to get that sound out of FL Slayer. I've gotten some pretty decent (not great, but decent) sounds out of it before...

I don't know dude, but bumping this thread for you haha.

Well do you have Hardcore with YOUR effects package with FL? There's so many great pedals and presets that will make your sounds better than without it.

That was just one thing that would've been nice. Anything will work, thought.

As of right now, this is all I have. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/63501258/liquid.mp3

The guitar comes in at another point in the song, and the volume on it is a little low, intentionally. I guess it's okay.

Just never use Slayer ever, as opening it within your DAW will cause your face to melt.

Yeah, I never found the FL Slayer any useful. It's simply... bad... and Image Line should feel bad.

Uhhh... It's like telling a dog to play drums (assuming he never had, like me, any guitar training.)

You could try to google for some VSTs, but nothing will beat a real guitar. Perhaps do the track and then ask someone to collab on it by playing a guitar the way you imagine? Never hurts to ask, especially on MLR forums, where there are so many talented people that would love to play a guitar just for fun.

Never use FL Slayer as a guitar
Ever

Just don't do it

It can make some neat SYNTH sounds, but it fundamentally fails at being a guitar.

Generally any "distorted guitar" plugin tends to fail unless it's a really, really good one from what I've seen - some can get some passable clean guitar sounds but the distorted sound is always utter bullocks. The closest I've come to passable distorted guitar from synthesized sources has been to take a clean guitar sound and distort it myself:

And still sounds rather bad but here's how I did it:

Basically it was using Pro Tool's built in plugin Xpand!2, which honestly I wouldn't suggest at all since it's sounds tend to be thin and cheesy BUT:
-Layer a muted guitar sound with a pick sound and a really quiet clean guitar (it sounds weak clean, but when ran through distortion it really picks up so this doesn't need to be very loud at all).
-Run the "guitar" through amp simulation - do whatever you will with it

Also double tracking can always help if you adjust the velocities on the two to be a little different from both.

Generally though unless you're willing to shell out a ton of money, you're not going to get a very good guitar sound from plugins - it's a really hard instrument to emulate convincingly.

Now if you have the cash.....

I do in fact have some guitar experience, but I have lost ALL of my musical instruments when I moved, a couple years ago, and never really brought myself up to buying more.

BUT THE COLLAB IDEA. IDEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Gnarr, if you're reading this... HALP ME!

^^^^^^

Also look into Kontakt libraries if that does not help. Slayer by itself is pretty lame.

I might have to check that out someday, but as of now, the song has turned into a mini collab c:
