Is it good mixing-wise yet?

Postby Hirosashii » 30 Apr 2012 18:57

EDIT: http://www.box.com/s/cbf332ae379442876d4c (after listening to Whitetail)

I took a bunch of mixing suggestions from various locations, but I'm not sure if I'm done. It may be me being over-criticizing of myself, but it still doesn't sound quite as clear as some other songs I've heard. I'm sure I'm still missing something, if not a lot of things. This can't possibly be the cleanest it can be, right? XD.

-Your drums are really really weak, turn them up - especially the kick and the snare
-Try EQing out the low ranges of the pad to give some more room to the kick and bass, it sounds like it's dominating the soundscape a bit. Also maybe some stereo width to spread it out a bit, generally pads tend to sound well on the sides while the more important instruments (like in this case the vocals) stay around the center. It's not too bad stereo wise atm honestly, but it does sound like it's dominating the attention a bit, in the very least I'd turn it down a bit.
-Add in sub bass with the wub bass, wub bass is really weak without sine/triangle sub bass to support it (either it's weak or it has muddy low ranges, either way you want to do the sub bass manually)
-Your kick is just a low rumble, it's really hard to hear - try layering a kick with a more poppy high-end to give it some more presence
-Your hi-hat just sounds really static, I'd suggest getting some more velocity layers or using EQ or something to get a few samples of different (just slightly different) levels and mixing in those different samples around a little to make it sound more "human"

Yeah it could still use a bit of work, it's a good start though

Thank you so very much. Turns out I forgot to turn back up the kick and snare after doing a little experiment (like the smart person I am...) Otherwise, thank you very much for these suggestions; I shall take them and use them to the best of my ability.

I ended up having a very weak kick and snare that were being drowned out by my subbass and other instruments.

Some people like to side-chain stuff really soon, but I look at it as a last resort.

Find the room wherever you can, and if all else fails, make it.

My This Day Aria Remix had so much going on, it ended up being a mixing and EQ nightmare. When all else was said and done, my drums were still weak, which is when I went to side-chained compression, and made just a little room for that last bit I needed for my mix.

Ummm... May I ask, why?
I have no idea why there's a ''Tough guys don't use side-chaining''-trend going on. If we have useful tools we should use them, right? That's what they have been made for! For me it's the same thing as painter saying that colours are for pussies, and they shouldn't be used.
