Kinda new to EDM production, some pointers would be awesome

Postby BirdMan » 24 Apr 2012 19:49

(This is my first post.)
I use FL Studio 10, and while I've had it for quite a while, I've only been getting into it recently. I've put a few sloppy tracks together just for testing synths and whatnot. I admire the styles of Alex S, Living Tombstone, Art Attack, and Wooden Toaster. Just looking for some pointers on where to go from my current standing, i.e. Music Kindergarten, so if anyone has tips for producing dance/dubstep/moombahcore I would really appreciate it!

My current "songs" (if you can call them that)

The first thing I would do is brush up on music theory. (Implying I even understand it) You've got some really weird "clashing" notes in there, and it really doesn't have any kind of musical direction. I'm NOT trying to be a dick.

I figured my music theory would be bad, considering I have played drums my entire life... Any suggestions on where to learn or read about it so my notes don't clash?

And the white noise in the first one was kind of thrown in, so when I uploaded it to SoundCloud I realized I should have taken it out after it did the "woosh" sound

Read pages 201-231 from the Dance Music Manual (second edition) by Rick Snoman... the theory is basic but should be enough for you to get started.

I like 'em! Like the other guys said, brush up a bit on basic music theory. In addition to what Kromium suggested for you to read, you can always look on YouTube as well. There are tons of videos with tips and pointers for making specific types of music, such as House tutorials, or Dubstep tutorials, and sometimes those can help a lot.
