Breakcore/Breakbeats in general

Postby StormWolf » 11 Feb 2012 11:06

How would I go about making them?
I guess I'm decent-ish at breakbeats, but when it comes to breakcore, I don't really know how to structure anything
I tried guessing and stuff once, kinda ended up with literally pure drumspam, and not the good type D:
I kinda want to learn to make the type of stuff foozogz makes...
Can anyone help? Anything would be useful, whether it be samples, how to build a good breakcore pattern, i dunno, anything
Because I am like, a complete noob when it comes to breakcore and I want to learn~

I am not an expert by any means BUT a couple recommendations until someone better comes along would be.

For BREAKCORE:
* odd time signatures
* overlapping different drum patterns
* assorted and uneven effect use (dblue glitch is a must to know and use)
* lots of stuttering and beat slicing
* lotta pitch/speed changes

just so we're clear

Breakbeats can be any speed but are generally 120-140 as a "genre" but you can use sped up hip hop beats to use them so using existing breakbeat samples whether origianlly slow or fast will work great and is acceptable.

When much faster they'd be "drum & bass" or if very heavy "jungle" (150-180 bpm)

Breakcore as i stated above is a lot more glitchy + effects driven (less danceable) than drum & bass but otherwise is not TOO far removed drum & bass.

Again you may know all this but anyone reading should be familiar with this and may get something from the thread. Going to include obvious video for obvious reasons but an amazing 18 min video on likely the most important 6 sec breakbeat really shows in in detail how it can be used in all kinds of music.

there was a link to classic breakbeats that's in a thread here somewhere (and has them easily downloadable but i can't find it right this moment. I'll link this other link here as it links plenty of great hip-hop beats which most of these though.

Important note is to make sure that your glitches are on beat. Zooming in is the best tool to use when making stutters. As for bpm any bpm goes. I've done breaks in 180 bpm as well as 80 bpm.
Personally I dislike using dblue glitch for the effects, but that's because I find that fucking with the waveform is much easier when it comes to getting the result that I want. :F
