If the pickups suck, you can always change them.

"Built in" meaning what exactly? Neck through/set neck? Or just good decent piece of wood that compliments the body and just isn't crap? I personally like bolt ons for the simple fact that in the rare/unforseen case that the neck warps or gets damaged in some other way, you can replace it. Of course, I'm really not into shredding and stuff, so the massive bolt on neck heal isn't really ever a problem to me. That might have something to do with it too.

I didn't really feel like making another TL;DR post, but wood quality is definitely one of those things you have to look into when testing out guitars. (and another reason you don't want to buy online, but instead in person.) Swamp ash for example, and if I'm not mistaken, can have two totally different qualities to it depending on where from the tree it's cut. I forget if the wood higher up or lower down is desirable, but regardless just because a guitar is made from swamp ash doesn't guarantee it'll be a decent piece of wood. Cheaper brands or MIM versions of American companies (like Fender MIM for instance) aren't very selective about what pieces of wood they'll use, so obviously you're more likely to get a shoddy piece of wood with an MIM strat as opposed to an American strat. Wood is the one thing you really can't change on an electric guitar, so if you get that right in the initial purchase, everything else is changeable.

To me, it still all comes down to testing out any guitar you like the look of. You may find a POS bottom of the barrel $150 starter guitar that looks, feels and plays better to you than any $1000+ guitar. It may be a one in a million chance, but you never know unless you try, and hell, you could end up saving pockets full of cash while still purchasing what you truly feel is the best guitar for you.

Basically what you said, Warbalist, just in a lot more words. The guitars I own that I'm most happy with are on both ends of the fence. My built from scratch explorer ended up costing a little over $1K and my silly meant-for-a-decoration Twilight Sparkle strat that cost around $200-$300.

I must ask Warbalist what pickups you prefer? I'm currently looking into getting new pickups for my seven string and ideas would be nice. I've currently got my eyes on a few brands; Seymour Duncan and Bare Knuckle to be exact. Wouldn't mind having a few names chucked my way to see if they're up my alley. (even particular models, if you chose these two brands.) What about you Kyoga? Any recommendations?

^Testing every guitar? Good idea. I have a $189 Ibanez RG320DXQM which I though was just going to be a temporary guitar for gigging with my 80's band. I've been using that sucker for recording and all sorts of stuff. Works like a champ!

I haven't ever replaced my pickups, but I have friends that swear by Bare Knuckle Pickups, and I must say, as soon as it's a reasonable decision for me, I'm gonna grab some, too. They are BAMF! They DESTROY any Duncans I've played.

I'll post the best method of a djent guitar tone tomorrow. I'll give you a list of VSTs and explain their purpose. And I'll try to link you to downloads for them (because they're free).

Why tomorrow? Because I'm posting this from my iPod.

I was dead set on the Bare Knuckle Warpig until I ran into this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFjMGHuNpOg

I'm really torn between it and the distortion sh6-b. The price is vastly different (~$210 compared to ~$70-$80) and they both sound really nice. I'm actually leaning more towards the Duncan.

I like the sound you get out of it Kyoga, but good god do I hate the headstock on Dean's.

edit: My opinion, of course. Not belittling your choice of instrument. :D

I've only ever played one Dean and I really liked it. I'm just a vain jack ass, haha!

1. When I'm practicing I usually just turn on a song I like and improv over top of it with various scales.
2. Blues and Folk-rock.
3. Light gauge strings.
4. I use a Guitar Rig Mobile as an I/O device and send it to an instance of Guitar Rig 5 in FL Studio.
5. I try to use any technique that I can to keep them fresh but I'll use one more if I just learned it to cement it into my mind(also it's like playing with a new toy! No better feeling).

Edit: No links to my playing skills yet but I will be submitting my first actual guitar piece to the Fanfic Appreciation Abum so yeah. Note also that I'm not that great only been playing a couple of years but as they say, practice practice practice!
DAW: FL studio 10
Plugins: Komplete 8 and various freeware plugins
Instruments: Ibanez Xiphos, M-Audio Oxygen 8 midi controller
Genre: Whatever feels good at the time

That's all I'm linking you guys to. Go find your own filter, EQ, and compressor. This is pretty much what you need to make djent with free VSTs. Note: You need an audio interface for this.

I love LePou and lecto! <3 OMG, so good for an ampsim.
I'm using God's Cab impulses (better to use off-axis positions and boost highs than to use dustcap positions) and a real TS9 that I hotrodded. I use that thing on EVERYTHING pretty much.
I wrote a free Audio Unit gate to djent better :) http://www.jinxtigr.com/f/DigitalBlack2.dmg you have to be good at setting up gates but it's really really tight...
