Question about Mixing things like flutes

Postby PonE-Sharp » 28 Nov 2012 19:56

I've noticed that when playing a sustained note, especially on high end woodwinds, there's this piercing sound when the note is held. I can't seem to get rid of it. I've put some EQ on it and lowered some of the higher frequencies, and have tried putting a limiter on it as well, but these sustained notes still have that almost earsplitting sound. What do I do to get rid of this?

Those ear splitting sound is the instrument ._. I think that if you removed the piercing sound, you'd get this airy sounding thingy. Maybe try compressing it? Pretty sure that wouldn't work either, but never hurts to try.

Also, I remember seeing you on here a couple of months ago. And I like your profile picture because reasons.

hehe thanks! I wish I were more active, though.

Tried a compressor, but that didn't work. I think I've figured out what it is though. I'd put some reverb on it, and it was happening whenever the reverbs clashed. Like if I played a E and then a D, it would have this short bassy vibration that killed the ears. Dunno how to fix that though, except by lowering the reverb itself, which seems like an unnecessary sacrifice because it adds so much to it. The exact instrument I'm using is a Panflute, btw.

Oh, yeah, Reverb can be a pain depending on what you're doing with it. Um, if you're using Fruity Reverb 2, try increasing the room size a big, or even better, put the damper on really low, like around the 1.5k-2k region, or somewhere around there. That should help

Ah yes that did the job! I honestly hadn't even noticed there was a reverb 2 on FL. I had just been using the first one. Thanks a ton! (Now to actually procrastinate make the music.)

Annoying, tiring or painful frequencies are indeed usually signs of too much activity in the treble regions. Especially the 2kHz region is notorious for its ear fatigueing qualities. That's where I usually cut a little bit with an equalizer when I'm noticing annoying sounds.
Other than that, what I usually do to avoid annoying reverb troubles is to actually roll-off everything below 600Hz and everything above 10kHz (apparently an Abbey Road thing) before it goes to the reverb effect.
