Pretty much this, I don't mind it in others, but I usually don't like the thought of adding visualizers to my videos, because I don't intend people to sit there quietly and watch it for five minutes. I want them to look at the art, of course, and I want my art to be related to the song, but I leave it at that.
And, you know, in the record store, or even online, a lot of people- myself included- will check something out based on the art. So it's worth keeping that in mind when you select your thumbnail and art, and all that.

I remember that video from my early days watching MTV. It made no sense to me, at all, but I remember it. Sadly- I don't remember the song very well. I blame TV.
You make a good point though, I don't think PMV artist and musical artist should be seperated, and I think a good PMV would capture some extra interest and let people sit and watch your song, much like a PV would.
Do some musicians collaborate with PMV artists? I could see that being positive thing for both.
