Time to get to work!

Postby warmobolt » 23 Sep 2012 14:23

For a few weeks now I have been interested in making my own music, I think the only reason I am at this point where I am now is because of the Brony music scene
I thought one day, if all these amazing guys started out on a PC in their bedroom, why can't I?

Anyway, I can just play the piano, and have little to no knowledge with FL Studio, I have been thinking about getting a Midi to USB adapter to get my keyboard on pc, as I can see that as the only way I can produce music properly

Now, for my Uni studies I decided to get a Macbook, which I am planning to learn how to use Garageband and then moving onto Logic

Personally, It's very frustrating to me that sometimes I have so many music ideas, but I can never get it onto the computer, one day I can hopefully go to bed at the end of the day and think that I have made a difference and people are enjoying the music made by a crazy guy on his own with a computer :)

Go for it man! Like you said, tons of popular producers started out a lot how you're probably feeling right now. Piano is the best instrument to know how to play to make music in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) so you're already in a good place!

I'd recommend moving away from FL and into something like Logic or Ableton (like you said), but also against buying a Mac, but those are all personal preferences :D

This is the thing I struggle with the most word for word. The thing is though, a DAW is an instrument in of itself. It takes years to master using a DAW to get the sounds you want out of it, even if you have great ideas. Practice Practice Practice and don't give up! Treat your DAW and synths like you're learning a whole new instrument, because that's essentially what it is.

Good luck and don't quit because you will be frustrated, but push through!

I'll be honest, I'm starting to get better and more creative many thanks to the brony scene. Music can surprisingly get competitive, even if you're just a hobbyist like me, and after hearing some of people's brony originals and remixes upping the ante just came natural.
And its good you play piano cause it'll make making music via PC that much easier. Its a living hell if you only know bass guitar and viola like me.

Looking forward to hearing your stuff.

I started off kinda like you, except with Reason and with little musical knowledge at all. The brony community is really probably the greatest thing I've decided to get involved with, ever. Aside from meeting many amazing people and all that, I also was continually learning new things about music and other stuff in general. I probably would have quit by now if it hadn't been for the support of people I met through this community, as well as several friends who I've become extremely close with because of this community.

With regards to software, FL Studio seems to be a good place to start, and if you like, stick with. I'm learning it now actually, even though I still use Reason. I'm probably going to have to use Logic soon for an electronic music course I'm taking next semester, so I guess I'll see how I like that.

Also, welcome to the forum buddy!
