Vocal Covers for Practice?

Postby Sonarch » 03 Aug 2012 16:40

Do you guys think that it would be a decent idea to do covers of some vocal pony songs, just for the experience? I know next to nothing about singing/rapping, so I feel like this would be a good way to learn the ropes firsthand and have some fun before trying write my own songs.

I'm making a list of songs I want to do vocal covers for. Any suggestions?

Maybe I can jump in at some point?
I think it'd be great to duet, or possibly have more than two people in on a song. (Like Winter Wrap Up or something along those lines)

Nice little low-level-musician idea. :D

I actually have this awesome idea that could be done with two people, so I may message you when I actually start to work on it.

Vocal covers is how I learned to sing!! Absolutely do it! Pick a handful of artists (pony or not) that you want to sound like, and try to copy them. Do that for a bit, then start to add your own spins on them. In no time, you will have found your voice.

Copying other people's vocal styles is the fastest way to learn to sing. As a mostly self-taught vocalist, I can tell you that.

I've also got a guide on learning to sing buried somewhere in the technique forum.

I saw that guide, and I plan to read it thoroughly when I get going with it.

Alright, I have decided that my first step will be to record the Smile song, partially because I recently found that it doesn't sound to bad when I sing it, and partially so I can post it up and make sure my mic and everything are good.

Metropolis pt.1 The Miracle and The Sleeper
by Dream Theater

Good luck coming anywhere near James Labrie's vocal range. If you can though, you can have all my internetz.

Or just try one of Opeth's non-death metal songs, such as Death Whispered a Lullaby. They're easy enough, and sound absolutely amazing.

Or if you are like me, go for the death metal vocals and try to sing Ghost of Perdition without warming up first (and I wonder why I can barely control my voice).

Collab with all the people!!!

Seriously though, I would love to collab, and would also like more practice. So why not? A duet would be awesome, and a trio would be even better. I'm getting excited thinking about it.

They do make great practice though, I have a few old covers I've done, but there either lost or hidden. So go right ahead and do it.

Once I get some experience with recording and everything, I would love to do all kinds of collabs. Really, just mention wanting to collab and i'll put you on the word doc I have for all my potential collabs.

I doubt I could do anything related to metal. I'm thinking more like pony songs and songs from the community right now. I really want to do Pinkie's Brew over the Russian Gypsy Jazz instrumental, among other things.

Actually, Dream Theater's singer, James Labrie, has a very clean, opera sort of voice. He didn't start growling until their third or fourth album. If you want to cover some of their stuff, try some songs off of Images and Words. "Another Day" is mostly soft and upper tenor range, except for one part. "Surrounded" is fairly easy, if I remember.

But, still, I wouldn't recommend attempting attempting Dream Theater if you're a beginner. Find something easier.

Actually, I take that back. Look up DT's song, "Silent Man." That's really easy to sing and play.
