Y/N Recreating songs

Postby Sirspamalot » 03 Sep 2012 00:52

Background: I have no previous experience whatsoever creating electronic music. I listen to a lot of everything(dubstep, house, dnb etc.), the brony community being pretty much my only exposure to edm. I have 10 years of piano experience, and that's pretty much it.

So, back on topic, what I am asking is this:

What is your opinion recreating (as in trying to match synths, melodies, basslines, drumlines, note by note) songs for practice? Or is it a waste of time when you could be making remixes/original stuff and learning through that?
Can a rationalist make music? Let's math it out!

Its a great way to learn synthesis, your DAW, and basic electronic music production skills when your first starting out and don't want to master the creativity aspect of it at the same time. Once you do learn the ropes you will want to produce your own tracks and not try to recreate others and making your own stuff will grow your skills much faster.

Y
you'll learn a lot of techniques used by the original artist, notice many things you didn't notice before, get to know how a song is built, how synths are made (sometimes they're simpler than they seem to be), and your remakes will get better every time, as well as your music.

I remade four songs in my one year long career, and every time i finished (or decided to finish), I felt really inspired to make original music.

Id say go for it, can't hurt imo. Doing it myself right now, and changing the thing into a pony remake version. Because why not :D

Something vaguely related that might interest you, although it shouldn't replace remaking tracks on your own.

These guys remake parts of popular electronic tracks in FL studio then offer the project file to download, just checking out how the track is structured and how some of the sounds that i love are made has really increased my understanding of how electronic tracks are pieced together.

Genres: Orchestral, Indie Pop (eventually)
