How do you make extremely robotic wubs? (In Massive)

Postby ChromaticChaosPony » 28 Aug 2012 18:03

Does anyone here know how to synthesize extremely reobotic sounding wobble bass in Massive? Excision, Downlink, and Datsik style wubs.

I got close a few times, but it just doesn't sound robotic enough.

Every filter except hi pass and acid, duckorgan waveform, bronze waveform, everything in the noise oscillator, saw waves, square waves, high resonance, sample and hold, hardclipper, brainier tune, dimension expander, chorus, etc.

I can get some nice and growls sounds, but not very robotic. I only have one bass patch that actually succeeded at that (an Excision style patch). I don't want to use the same patch for everything though.

Update: I somehow synthesized a transformers sound effect, but it is a sound effect, not a bass.

Maybe I'm just setting my expectations too high.

comb filter perhaps?

I couldn't check the examples, they were blocked.

Phase modulation can make things sound robotic sometimes. Lots of sine and parabolic shaper. A comb filter with the cutoff set at the default position and mid-high feedback makes anything sound a bit more metallic. you can modulate the cutoff but I find that it usually makes things sound ugly. Bandreject/double notch with resonance sounds better when modulating the cutoff imo.

Just my experience with those kinds of sounds.

Play with the double notch filter+Pitch modulation at the same speed. Put a low pass filter over that over different waveforms and use the Bend functions wisely. I created my Android wub (available in my preset pack, check Sharing forum) with the A.I. waveform, but it's really hard to find the sweet spot, took me a while.

And once you find that sweet spot, good lord, DO NOT tinker with the patch anymore without saving it!

I'll just add in that while there's a lot to be said about making these sorts of sounds using only Massive, FX VSTs like Ohmicide, WOW Filter, BiFilter, and even Guitar Rig can be used to make your wubs sound even more robotic. I personally like WOW Filter, but I'm trying to get into BiFilter (which is what Six of Lasers uses). At any rate, a notch/bandreject filter with an automated cutoff can work wonders on a bass sound. Phasers are also nice when used properly.

And one other bit of advice from SoL, if you do use external effects, EQ a little after each pass through a filter, it'll keep the sound from getting horribly muddy (a thing that's easy to do if you rely too much on Massive's internal effects).

I can't feel my brain.

A bitcrusher should give you a really crunchy sound. But sample and hold can be REALLY robotic if you use it correctly. Try modulating the pitch, or the filter cutoff while S&H is active.

I just set everything to -12 and put a Scream filter on it.
