I have loops and ideas, but how do I make a song with them?

Postby AgonistAgent » 26 Aug 2012 02:48

Hi! I've been experimenting with LMMS recently (long story, need to write a biology song by Wednesday). I've managed to get some decent loops(including improv melodies) and mixing, but I can't see the forest for the trees.

I suppose most of the big picture has to be done in my head, but I don't even know where to start :/

Any advice?

Basic song structure (which I think is what you're looking for) has these key elements:

a theme or musical idea that identifies the song (for example the chorus of a song)
variations on this theme (verses)
and sometimes episodes or segues away from the theme (bridge)

They can also have any, all, or none of the following:
Introductions, Codas (Outro-ductions), Key Changes, modulations, new themes, movements (you don't see much of these last two in popular music)

You just need to figure out which loops go where. A big picture could be a plan on paper or you could just jump in.

Perhaps start with the drum loop and bring in some bass 4 bars in, then go from there. Once you start these things they get a lot easier.
