What plugins are good at making dubstep style sounds...

Postby Q-Dert » 18 Aug 2012 05:42

...besides Massive? I know Massive is the go-to VSTi for dubstep, but surely there are other good ones out there, right?

There's heaps of other plugins that make nice Dubstep sounds, like FM8 and Sytrus to name a few :P

I've used Zebra2 before, and I don't even really make dubstep.

I'm not saying they were terrific wobble basses, but in the hands of an actual dubstep producer, I could see some quality wobbles come out of there too.

I had this question asked at BUCK, and what I really readit as is this:

'Massive is too hard for me.'

Learning synthesis is not easy. Despite what people say, it is more complex than just learning an instrument. It's like learning how the orchestra works, different timbres, articulations and textures. And on top of that you need to learn how to make pianos and violins and woodwinds, and THEN yiu need to learn how to make instruments no one has made before. But if I can give you one tip, its this: Stick to Massive, learn how synthesis works, then learn how IT works. You don't need to go into the mathematics of it all, but knowing the difference between a square and a saw, what ADSR means, what a portamento does, how filters and resonance affect the sound is all integral to making good dubstep sounds, and aynth sounds in general.

Yes, it's hard, yes it's disheartening. But we are here to help, and no one said it was easy. Put the effort in, and I guarantee you'll see results much, much faster than if you were to try every VST in existence.

Massive seems overly difficult at first, but I promise you will get the hang of it rather quickly.

It's the concept of modulation that messes with people's heads, but as soon as you get past the dizzying amount of colors, shapes, etc. in front of you, Massive will seem to get easier.

Although then it gets hard again, when you start messing with the more advanced features you can do with it.

Massive is a lot easier compared to other stuff like fm8 ;_;

Lets see, you have massive, sylenth1 could make a few wubs, fm8.

first of all: brostep

now, for Growly, skrillex-esque sounds, do not use Massive. Use FM8 or Absynth (I use the latter), as it's what skrillex himself uses for these growls. he also uses Massive, but for other things.

I found Massive to sound less organic than Z3TA+2 and to be less modular than Absynth.

But the most important thing ever about making sounds that will work good for you is:
No VSTi will make brostep for you. You need to learn sound design and composition yourself.

Anything that lets you create a detuned triple saw synth that can have an automated or LFO controlled LP, BP, notch, or similar kind of filter. Z3ta and Atlantis should work well.

I recall ArtAttack saying he uses only Massive, and he's gotten that sound. I may be wrong, idk. Certainly it'd be crazy hard to get in Massive.

Back on topic, almost any synth is capable of decent sounding wobbles and such. Trick is knowing synthesis, and then getting adept on a particular synth. I highly suggest sticking to just one. There's no way to practically get good at a dozen synthesizers at once.
