Either Midi automation, or making bunch of patterns so you can reuse pieces from time to time, I usually do the second choice though, I'm pretty lazy with this stuff, or, just make one big pattern by grouping different patterns

If I ever need to write a beat, I imagine myself playing drums along to the track. You know how you can beat-box the perfect beat to a song? Just do that for your core beat.

To get the variation, just improv using your mouth or your mime-kit. Record yourself and attempt to replicate.

Make your main drum beat, then clone that pattern and change it up just a little bit, and continue doing it 4 or 5 times. Ultimately you will get various drum patterns that you can reuse trough the song. Now clone the main pattern again and make some good drum transitions, just about two, and you already have enough material
