Hardware synthesizers

Postby Artimeus » 10 Aug 2012 23:59

Alright guys, I just bought myself a microKORG, and instantly fell in love with it. The vocoder alone was worth the price of purchase. As a result, I've been doing some wish-listing for potential future purchases. I'd like to one day own some old analog and modular synthesizers, ala Deadmau5-style, but for now I am happy with the modernized digital models.

So, with that being said, do any of you own hardware-based synthesizers, and if so, which is your favorite? Do you use it regularly for your productions?

I got a Novation X-Station which is mostly used as a soundcard these days rather synth. It was very digital sounding and could do some weird synthesis stuff but for the most stuff paid software would outshine it.

And more recently I got a used Korg MS-2000B (they don't sell them new anymore and are becoming rare). Its a VA synth but doesn't sound like it, its not digital or analog sounding; its something else entierly and I love it. It also has a crazy self oscilating filter which I have not found any good use for but its something that not even the software I use features. I have not touched the vocoder yet and have yet to understand the mod sequencer.

My next synth purchase is either going to be:
-A Doepfer Dark Energy (my start into the modular world)
-A Roland V-Synth (for its crazy sampling engine)
-Some other Analog synth, likely one from the Virus lineup..

Farfisa Commander, Roland Alpha Juno-1, Xoxbox.

Couldn't ask for more, unless it was some crazy old modular. With the roland and the xox I have classic acid tones anytime I want. Then the Farfisa is an ELECTRIC not even electronic organ and I just love it- it's the original Pink Floyd organ (or much like it, not the same model exactly but pretty much the same).

The only VA synth I want is the Roland with the supersaw...

Roland XP-80. It's from 1996... they don't make them anymore... but when you find stuff in your basement that works, you just accept it, don't ask questions, and treasure that $1,500 that you saved.

Hopefully I'll learn to use the thing eventually. I'm hoping to get a MIDI interface and use it as a MIDI controller.

XP-80, now that is awesome. I actually have my Korg plugged into a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 USB interface, and use an Oxygen49 as my main controller. That way, I can set a patch on the Korg and use the Oxygen to control it rather than dealing with those tiny little keys.
