Hello, Noob Questions about Drum and Bass

Postby Thirteen » 29 Jul 2012 13:20

Yo guys! These might seem like easy questions or whatever, but anyway.

See these two songs?

How does one go about replicating those metallic sounding fills that they have? You know, those sounds between the kick and snare drums. Are those hats? And how would I make them sound like that?

Also, how can I make sounds muffle and fade in or out? Like what happens to the vocals in the first song at about 0:50, and what happens to the break in the second song at around 2:34? I know it has to do with filters or something, but I don't know what.

Can someone help a brutha out?

The percussion fills in a typical drum and bass song are hats, which have been pitch shifted so that playing them in rapid succession creates a noticeable alternation between the two, and makes that distinctive fill effect in a dnb drumline. You could do it with hihat samples, or you could just cut a sample out of, say, 'Sounds of Life' by Pendulum, which is now my source for dnb drums

And muffling sounds is accomplished by a lowpass filter, and fading that effect conists of automating the cutoff of said lowpass filter.

Now go forth and dnb! :D

I can't feel my brain.

It isn't really hard, I was kinda curious about these sounds earlier this month, but I tried it out, worked fine for me.

Well they are basically hats, ordering in a sequence of close, close, close, open,
To make that effect, low pass filer and EQs required in the channel filter, just cut the lower frequencies, to make it seem like it's going in and out Like in most liquid d'n'b song, try to mess around with note velocities, like go from 30% to 70% per note and go back down would sound pretty nice.

Hmmm. I knew they were hats. I just need to learn how to pitch shift them like that then.

Thanks for the help guys! I'll try this stuff out soon.

The muffling sound seems like a 6dB or so low pass filter on the second song, and a 12dB low pass on the first...
