Anyone dig livecoding?

Postby DerpyGrooves » 26 Jul 2012 03:57

"Live coding[1] (sometimes referred to as 'on-the-fly programming',[2] 'just in time programming') is a performance practice centred upon the use of improvised interactive programming in creating sound and image based digital media. Live coding is particularly prevalent in computer music, combining algorithmic composition with improvisation.[3] Typically, the process of writing is made visible by projecting the computer screen in the audience space, with ways of visualising the code an area of active research.[4] There are also approaches to human live coding in improvised dance.[5]"

Example:

I'm trying to learn Chuck/Supercollider as we speak and I was wondering if anyone else was into the whole idea of programmed music. It's weird, but I think the results can be way, way cool.

This seems really intriguing, I didn't know people actually did this sort of thing for their shows.
Personally I find anything that involves the possibility of chance, or alternative ways to approach the production, in music to be incredibly interesting.

Is Chuck/Supercollider a programming code / application used commonly for this sort of thing?

Wow. That's quite cool. Have you checked out Pure Data? It's super easy graphical programming language specialized in real time sound processing, so it could be useful. I've heard that soundtrack of Spore was made with it.

I get interested in working with tools like ChucK, Supercollider, Pure Data, and CSound periodically, though I've never tried to set anything up for live use. Definitely some amazing possibilities, but you have to have the patience for it. :/

This is quite interestion, I'm looking forward to work with programming languages like pure data

Except I know nothing about programing (excluding lua)

Also, staring at that picture makes my eyes hurt

Max6 is the program I know that people do this with a lot.
I use it to screw up live sounds, but it has so much potential for live programming with music. Here's a great video of someone doing it!

So we’ll hunt you. Because you can take it. Because you’re not our hero.
You’re a silent guardian of music, a watchful protector of songs.

I know next to nothing about all this - and watching Dr's video only made me more confused! - but I know these guys make really good music with "C++ coding and Max/MSP/Jitter patches," and sharing is caring.
