Chill DnB/IDM tips?

Postby SpyPie » 13 Jul 2012 20:36

Well, lately my head has been wanting to make Chill DnB/IDM (actually, I have no idea what it is, if you could tell me, that'd be swell). I think I'd want to try to make that. I would like if there were any tips you guys could throw at me, from Mastering and EQ, to simple Progressions tips. I can give you an Example/Inspiration of this 'Genre'

Thanks :)

well the beggining of the song featured some classic synths, like brass and all that

And make sure you use a-lot of sub bass, reverbs and filters,

This is all I really know...really

Basically, my method for any sort of chill bass music includes the following tips:
-A subtle (not punchy) kick consisting of mostly bass and sub-bass frequencies
-A snare/clap without a lot of low-mid (again, you don't want it too punchy, but you want it to sound good, and still pop out of the mix enough to be heard throughout the track)
-Light hi-hats, maybe with some delay and reverb
-A powerful, centered sub-bass
-A stereo bass synth with no actual sub, pretty much there to fatten up the bass and make it sound more like a lead (lowpassed saws and triangle-waves are good for this)
-Automated frequency cutoff on the bass lead to emphasize whatever progression you put it to (it gives the melody two elements that are shifting, and makes it more interesting)
-Synth pads/strings playing along with the basic chord progression, possibly glitched if you want to :D
-High-mid/treble synth arps, possibly with cutoff automation, and with delay and reverb
-Samples, played with through whatever kind of distortion you want
-(Optional) A phased synth lead, maybe with a little reverb too

I can't feel my brain.

That pretty much sums it up...since you asked for some clarification though, chill DnB is usually referred to as liquid DnB, and IDM is usually referring to more experimental sorts of genres like glitch and trip hop.

I disagree with some points Colortwelve mentioned, especially regarding the drums.
while it's up to personal preference to some extend you still want your drums to be defined and punchy, since they are what gives the track it's drive. "why would I need drive in my chill liquid dnb track?" I hear you saying. Because that is what makes this kind of music. The fast paced drums combined with rather slow and subtle melodies and basslines. Just check out this example:

In terms of instruments and sounds there really aren't set rules as to what to use, just make sure that everything flows well together and fits the theme.
Also I personally like to use a very long reverb (almost 10s) on most synths to add some warmth and to make the whole track sound full.

Yeah... You should probably listen to Addictia moreso than to me... I'd say he knows what he's doing a bit more than I do.
