Getting Started: Requesting Help With Music Theory

Postby JustTwoBits » 11 Jul 2012 16:01

Hi everyone!

So I've been pretty much nonexistent here and I hate that, but complete lack of any musical background has caused all of my attempts at kickstarting my music production to end in utter frustration.

One thing that I've noticed in my lurking through the forums is that Music Theory seems to be pretty important from the get-go. Of course and unfortunately, I have no grasp of the concept.

So, I guess my second newbie question to you lovely folks is: What are some good ways to go about learning music theory? School courses are out of the question, as the backwoods establishment I attend has no trace of such a thing, but are there any good online alternatives that you guys know of? Should I try and find a tutor? I'm really in the dark...

Thanks!

It depends on how much you actually know. I take a lot of theory for granted and assume that I can speak with someone who has "no theory knowledge" about keys, scales, chords, progressions, notes, and the circle of 4ths and have them be able to follow me but I find that that is not the case with many people.

Yeah... You can pretty much clump me in there with "many people"...

I mean I don't know absolutely nothing. I took a keyboarding class my sophomore year, but I didn't take a whole lot from it...
