First remix: Thoughts/Advice/Critiques/?

Postby Eccentrifuge » 01 Jul 2012 20:02

So I thought I'd majorly break out of my genre (orchestral) and make a trance remix of one of my songs.
There are a lot of firsts for me involved here:
First time remixing.
First time sidechaining.
First time using sample chops.
And pretty much my first legitimate stab at EDM.

I'm....mostly pleased with the turnout, but I still can't help but feel like it might suck on some fundamental level.
Any thoughts, advice, critiques for an EDM newbie?

Pretty damn good for a first go, man! Especially considering the nature of the original.
Engaging critique mode:
- change your volume levels. The vocal splices are much louder than everything else, and the drums start off fine, but get drowned out. You can bring them forward more through more exaggerated sidechaining, which is equally a stylistic choice, or by adding a good compressor.
- get a bassier kick tone. This is at your own discretion, really. The kick comes through really well on the treble end, but lacks a bass-y punch. You might consider using pitched kicks, or adding a burst of sub-bass on every kick. Which brings me to...
- sub-bass! I don't have the right headphones to say this with 100% confidence, but boost your sub. For that matter, boost your regular ol' bass too. You have a nice tone, but it needs more low-end oomph (hence my note about pitched kicks).
Hope any of that helps. Welcome to the EDM herd. 8D

P.S. And of course,

For the purposes of this video, your name is now Gummy.
