Working with vocalists

Postby bread » 29 Jun 2012 17:40

Ok, so I've found a vocalist that would like to sing in one of my tracks. Problem is that when I will go over to where we will record the vocals I won't be able to change anything in the track as it is now for about two weeks. So I will have to make a rough version for the vocalist to sing over and then finish the track when I get back to my computer two weeks later.

Does anyone have any tips on how the rough version should sound, to give the vocalist an easier time to sing over it? I have never really worked with a singer before so I don't know much of how I should structure the parts where the vocals should go. If you have any tips regarding working with vocals at all I would be happy to hear them. Thanks! :)

If you really just want the vocalist to get recording, only render your drums and whatever instruments you have going that could be considered vocal analogues (instruments playing roughly to the same melody as the vocalist) and tell them explicitly where each verse, chorus, etc. is (in minutes/seconds). Have them record on a blank audio file or whatever so that all they have to give you is a vocal stem, at which point you'll be able to mix it into your track and finish it how you want it.

I can't feel my brain.

Thanks for the tips guys!

The vocalist will be somewhat part of the creative process as we will be writing and recording the lyrics together (irl) which I think will help a lot. I'll render an extra long part with drumbeat, chords and bass as you suggested and I will try my best to communicate to get the best results. :)
